Description
System Engineer in the Sustaining Engineering & Integration Team, Directorate of Human and Robotic Exploration Programmes (D/HRE), assigned as integrated support from the Systems Engineering Division, Systems Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.
You will be part of a team responsible for maintaining the ESA infrastructure (on-orbit and ground-based) of the International Space Station (ISS). You will also assume engineering integration responsibilities towards the variety of utilisation customers in support of achieving their science objectives. The Engineering Team supports other missions, such as the Gateway programme, and you may also support activities relating to existing or future D/HRE programmes in coordination with the Directorate’s management and experts.
Your tasks will relate to the planning, execution and oversight of the engineering activities concerning the operations of the ESA ISS flight and ground-based infrastructure, systems, payloads, technology demonstrators and barter items.
Duties
Your tasks and responsibilities will include:
• acting as Technical Officer, placing and managing external and internal contracts and work packages;
• fulfilling the role of Engineering Lead for dedicated facilities and ISS increments and taking on additional related technical tasks as required;
• delivering integration and sustaining engineering expertise to associated utilisation customers;
• reinforcing mission definition with engineering assessments, directly and through industry/utilisation partners;
• reinforcing mission implementation through the definition and implementation of requirements and for troubleshooting, anomaly resolution and maintenance activities;
• assimilating end-to-end activities for new developments, system evolutions and updates, including their transition to operations;
• bolstering increment integration activities and participating in and representing ESA Engineering as required for increment integration and payload mission integration matters up to final mission readiness meetings;
• monitoring industry’s provision of services to ESA and partners and, as required,
• evaluating new science requirements and new ISS payloads from an ISS infrastructure and engineering integration feasibility as well as affordability point of view (technical, economically including schedule perspective) .
You are expected to be flexible, with the ability to prioritise and adapt tasks and responsibilities as engineering activities naturally evolve and handle sudden urgent situations that may arise.
In the execution of your tasks, you will coordinate and work with industry, other teams within D/HRE and other ESA directorates, as well as external partners.
You will also participate in periodic meetings with parent Division contributing to the transfer of technical knowledge and lessons learned across the Agency.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
