The Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS), is looking for a:

Lecturer (replacement position) in Classical Hebrew and Aramaic (0,4 - 0,5 fte)

Leiden University invites applications for a fixed term (18 months) lectureship Classical Hebrew and Aramaic to begin 1 August 2024. This replacement position is situated in the Leiden Institute for Area Studies.

The lectureship is aimed at candidates of any nationality who have proven their potential to teach and engage students at BA and MA level. The successful candidate will teach courses in the BA Ancient Near Eastern Studies and the MA and ResMA Classics and Ancient Civilizations, supervise BA and MA theses in all these programmes and undertake the appropriate level of administration associated with the courses they teach. We seek applicants with proven expertise in Classical Hebrew and Aramaic in their broader historical and linguistic contexts and the ability to teach and revise courses appropriately.

Key responsibilities

  • Teaching courses in ancient Hebrew language, literature and culture at BA and MA level
  • Administrative tasks related to the courses taught
  • Supervise BA and MA theses

Requirements

  • A PhD degree in a relevant field of study; Candidates near completion of the degree will be considered
  • Excellent communication and organization skills;
  • Excellent command of English;
  • Knowledge of Dutch (the BA programmes are taught in Dutch)

Terms and Conditions
We offer a 18 months 0,4 fte or 0,5 fte position (15,2-19 hours per week) from 1 August 2024 to 31 January 2026.
Salary range from € 4.332- to €5929.- gross per month (pay scale 11), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
The lecturer may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until they fully meet the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to the number of years of relevant work experience.
