Offer Description

The Department of Communication and Cognition in the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences is looking for two enthusiastic new colleagues in Cognition and Communication. This position is especially suitable for researchers who have just obtained their PhD and want to continue their academic career.

The successful candidates will contribute to one of the leading programs in the Netherlands in Communication and Information Sciences (CIS, bachelor and master). Annually, the CIS program attracts approximately 100 new bachelor students, 200 new premaster students, and 300 new master students. The candidates are expected to mainly teach courses within the Business Communication and Digital Media track (BDM track), as well as research methods and skills-oriented courses. Within the BDM track, we study how the rapidly changing internet and digital media technologies impact organizational communication, and examine how people interact online, both in organizational settings and in social interactions. Example courses include Technology in Organizations, Resistance & Persuasion, and Responsible Strategic Communication. Skills and research method courses include academic writing, introduction to statistics, and survey design. Lecturers will also supervise bachelor thesis groups and master theses on various topics. We are looking for lecturers who can teach both in Dutch and in English.

The successful candidates will be part of the Tilburg Center for Cognition and Communication (TiCC). Researchers in TiCC explore cognitive and social aspects of human communication through a multidisciplinary approach, combining careful experimentation with survey methods, interviews, content analyses and computational modelling. We value methodological innovation and focus on and aim to further develop our research on themes such as: the human mind in interaction; communication, resilience and empowerment; social responsibility and effective communication design; ethics and responsible human-centered AI design; inclusion, language, and well-being in a changing (digital) society; health and climate communication; interpersonal and multimodal communication in innovative contexts.

The Department of Communication and Cognition is responsible for the Tilburg center for Cognition and Communication (TiCC), where research is conducted into cognitive and social aspects of human communication through a multidisciplinary approach combining careful experimentation with survey methods, corpus analyses and computational modeling. The research group consists of about 80 researchers covering a broad range of topics relevant for cognition and communication, and this includes approximately 20 PhD students. Core research domains include communication and technology, cross-cultural communication, computational linguistics, information visualisation, marketing and business communication, language production, and non-verbal communication, with a strong emphasis on digital methods.

Research and education at the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences (TSHD) has a unique focus on humans in the context of the globalizing digital society, on the development of artificial intelligence and interactive technologies, on their impact on communication, culture and society, and on moral and existential challenges that arise. The School of Humanities and Digital Sciences consists of four departments: Communication and Cognition, Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence, Culture Studies and Philosophy; several research institutes and a faculty office. Also the University College Tilburg is part of the School. The School has approximately 3100 students and around 270 employees.
