The Department of Anthropology currently has a vacancy concerning a temporary part-time research assistant for the Horizon funded project: LeTs-Care – Learning from Long-Term Care practices for the EU Care strategy.

The project Let’s Care aims to develop new forms of policy interventions by learning from situated care solutions and practices in underprivileged regions in seven chosen European countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Italy (project lead) Lithuania, Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands). The project is directed by Barbara Da Roit, University of Venice. It aims to contribute to solving four LTC policy challenges that European societies are facing and which are accelerated by regional inequalities: affordability and accessibility of care; quality of care; quality of care work; and financial sustainability. It has three different research legs: (1) Policy analysis, (2) ethnographic case studies of consolidated and emerging care practices, (3) and policy learning. The Amsterdam team is leading the second research leg on consolidated and emerging LTC practices.

The ethnographic fieldwork in the Netherlands will take place in Noord Holland outside of the Randstad and is focussed on:

  • housing and dementia/ dependent living arrangements;
  • care in neighborhoods creative practices in institutionalized long-term care;
  • care and technologies.

The Amsterdam team is led by Jeannette Pols and Kristine Krause and includes PhD candidate Sabya van Elswijk, master students who are invited to join the project and the research assistant who will be hired.

What are you going to do

This position entails project management and research related tasks, including participating in the ethnographic fieldwork. It requires a pro-active, independent attitude. We are looking for somebody who will help us keep an overview in a very complex project.

Project management tasks

  • Keeping an overview of timelines and deliverables and keeping track of what the NL team needs to do, including reminding team members of tasks;
  • organizing data and deliverables and looking after time sheets;
  • organizing team meetings and assisting in organizing consortium meeting in Amsterdam;
  • attend consortium meetings online and in partner countries;
  • setting up and updating digital infrastructures for the team and taking care of webpage updates;
  • doing all of this pro-actively.

Research related tasks 

  • Writing up draft reports;
  • searching and summarizing literature;
  • doing fieldwork in Noord Holland;
  • assisting team members in the fieldwork (including organizing interviews, writing up notes);
  • coordinating research activities of master students who participate in the project.

What do you have to offer

You have

  • a Master degree in anthropology, sociology, geography or related social sciences discipline;
  • excellent Dutch (for fieldwork and reading policy documents) and English language skills;
  • practical experience with ethnography and social science research, and interest in the topics are desirable.

What can we offer you

The position concerns temporary employment for a minimum of 20 hours per week at the Department of Anthropology. The starting date will be on 1 September 2024. Employment is for a maximum period of 37 months, in accordance with the available budget within the period of the project. Following a positive assessment after an initial employment term of one year, and barring altered circumstances, the initial term may be extended for a period to 31 December 2027.

Your initial salary will be €2,793 to €3,186 gross per month based on a 38-hour working week, in keeping with salary scale 7, as per the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities . We additionally offer an extensive package of secondary benefits, including 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
