Are you an enthusiastic and committed researcher with strong quantitative skills and knowledge of climate change impact assessments. Are you passionate about nature-based adaption? Perhaps this position can be the ideal job for you!

The team Climate Resilience at Wageningen Environmental Research is currently looking for a Climate Change Impact Modeller. The team Climate Resilience is working on nature-based adaptation to mitigate negative impacts and explore potentials of climate change in both urban and rural areas in the Netherlands and abroad. In the short term, your task as climate impact researcher will include:

  • Assessing the impact of climate change on crop production and water availability.
  • Assessing the potential of nature-based adaptation to mitigate adverse impact of climate change.

In the future your tasks will also include:

  • Assessing the impact of nature-based adaptation on water- and ecosystems (e.g. biodiversity, carbon sequestration);
  • Assessing the trade-offs and synergies when multiple types of NBS are applied simultaneously.

You will participate and contribute to national and international projects, including projects in East- and West Africa. You will actively engage with various partners and clients from governments, NGOs and commercial enterprises. You will acquire and implement projects in close interaction with clients. Your project results will be disseminated through client-oriented communication means. You will also publish project results in peer-reviewed journals. You will be member of a larger team of scientists within and outside Wageningen UR working on nature-based solutions to address multiple societal challenges amongst which mitigating climate change impacts and improving biodiversity.


Requirements
Specific Requirements
  • A university degree (MSc) in agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, climate sciences or earth systems sciences. A PhD is an advantage;
  • Strong quantitative skills in terms of analyzing and processing large data sets (remote sensing and climate data);
  • Experience with spatial modelling of impact of climate change and climate change adaption measures on crop production (WOFOST, DSSAT);
  • Proven skills with scripting and programming (e.g. Python, R, GIS);
  • Ability or willingness to learn about AI/ machine learning;
  • Experience with the visualisation of results to facilitate communication to clients;
  • Customer-oriented attitude;
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills in English for diverse audiences. Writing and communication skills in French would be an advantage.

We offer, depending on your experience, a competitive gross salary of between € 3,088,- and € 5,737,- for a full-time working week of 36 hours, in accordance with the CLA Wageningen Research (scale 10-11). The appointment is for minimally 32 and maximally 36 hours per week, for a period of 12-24 months. In case of good functioning and if future research financing allows, there is a possibility for a permanent position after 2 years.
