Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: ;

Are you a talented researcher in bioanalytical chemistry and passionate about hyphenated techniques? Do you enjoy developing and applying advanced separation and mass spectrometric technologies to analysis of biopolymers? Please apply at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU).

Location: AMSTERDAM
FTE: 0.8 - 1

Job description

Are you experienced in separation and mass spectrometry of biomacromolecules, such as proteins, oligonucleotides and/or polysaccharides? Are you interested in a tenure track assistant professor position? Then this may be an interesting offer for you.

You are embedded within the division of BioAnalytical Chemistry (BAC). Research, teaching and management are all parts of your work. The research of BAC is within the framework of bioanalytical sciences applied to resolving and characterizing biomacromolecular structures. Your research could include analysis of biopharmaceuticals and nucleic acid-based therapeutics, intact and native biopolymer analysis, topdown (glyco)proteomics, and conformational and higher-order structure analysis.

In your research, you develop and apply advanced separation techniques in combination with state-of-the-art mass spectrometry. We offer opportunities to use multidimensional chromatography, (capillary) electrophoresis, ion dissociation methods, ion-mobility-based separations, and other sophisticated technologies. We also encourage you to seek collaborations and synergies to answer your scientific questions.

Your duties
This tenure track position is starting at the level of assistant professor. Your work includes research, education and management (40%-40%-20%). Your main responsibilities are:

  • doing research that is closely connected to, strengthens, or complements the BAC research program; you develop and/or expand your own research line
  • acquiring and managing research funding
  • demonstrating your creative research output by publishing in well-recognized scientific journals
  • (co-)supervising the research of postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates, Master’s and Bachelor's students
  • participating in the educational program by teaching 2-3 courses a year in the department’s BSc and MSc programs
  • contributing to the division’s management and departmental activities

Requirements

You are an enthusiastic and ambitious scientist in analytical chemistry and/or mass spectrometry, and you can strengthen our research in Biomolecular Analysis. You are:

  • a scientist with a PhD and research profile in analytical or (bio)pharmaceutical sciences, or another relevant field. You have proven expertise to conduct research in the field of biomolecular separations and mass spectrometry
  • a scientist who can acquire external funding for your research. You publish articles in peer-reviewed journals and you are invited for lectures at international conferences
  • an enthusiastic lecturer with demonstrable teaching skills. You have proven experience with supervising BSc, MSc, and (preferably) PhD students. You have a basic University Teaching Qualification (BKO), or you are willing to acquire this in the first years of the appointment
  • a scientist with good managerial and communication skills and an open attitude

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3.821 (scale 11)

and a maximum €5,230 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

This is a tenure track position; the initial appointment will be for a period of five years. Based on performance indicators agreed at the start of the appointment, after a positive evaluation, you will be awarded a permanent, tenured employment in the position of Assistant Professor/Universitair Docent 1 (scale 12). At the latest, in the fifth year of the appointment the tenure decision will be taken. A midterm review will take place 2.5 years after starting date.

Additionally, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers excellent fringe benefits and various schemes and regulations to promote a good work/life balance, such as:
