Job description

The Mathematical Institute at Utrecht University is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor in Mathematical Economics (including, but not limited to game theory, mechanism and market design, algorithmic game theory, information design, decision theory, or mean-field games).
We are looking for candidates that can act as a bridge between mathematical economics and other fields in mathematics (e.g., lattice theory, nonlinear programming, algorithms, topology, geometry, stochastic processes, dynamical systems, category theory, set theory, model theory, computational complexity theory). Applicants should have outstanding research potential as well as the ability to provide high-quality teaching and a commitment to university service.
The Mathematical Institute has a strong research reputation and an excellent graduate programme. It is currently building up a research group at the intersection of mathematics, economics and finance. In this position, you will have a central role in this new initiative , both in research and teaching (BSc and MSc). In addition, you will supervise PhD candidates, collaborate with post-doctoral researchers, and be actively involved in organising events such as workshops and seminars.

Qualifications

We are looking for a colleague who has experience with working at the intersection of mathematics and economics and who brings multiple of the following qualifications:

  • a PhD in mathematics, economics, or related discipline;
  • at least two years of post-doctoral experience or similar;
  • a strong track record in research and excellent research potential;
  • the ability to teach in and develop courses for our BSc and MSc programmes in mathematics, as well as for mathematics courses for other disciplines (service teaching);
  • the ability to supervise PhD candidates and/or postdocs;

You will be required to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) during the first two years of the appointment. Utrecht University expects all employees to be proficient in both Dutch and English (level C1). Accordingly, we encourage you to develop and improve your language proficiency in both Dutch and English and offers you the opportunity to do so.
The department is committed to improving equality, diversity, and inclusion and strongly encourages applications by researchers from underrepresented groups.

Offer

We offer:

  • an appointment at the level of Assistant Professor, with the prospect of a permanent employment contract following a positive evaluation after at most 18 months, depending on the candidate’s experience;
  • a full-time gross salary ranging from €4,332 to €5,929 in scale 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (CAO);
  • 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions based on the CAO.

In addition to the employment conditions from the CAO for Dutch Universities, Utrecht University has a number of its own arrangements. These include agreements on professional development , leave arrangements, sports and cultural schemes and you get discounts on software and other IT products. We also give you the opportunity to expand your terms of employment through the Employment Conditions Selection Model. This is how we encourage you to grow.
