Offer Description

Do you want to make cloud computing more sustainable, more secure, more trustworthy, more appropriate for machine learning and data management? The Complex Cyber Infrastructure (CCI) research group of the University of Amsterdam is looking for an Assistant Professor in future cloud computing technologies, with a strong profile in research and teaching.

What are you going to do?
You are expected to actively contribute to the activities of the CCI research group, especially in the areas of research, teaching, and acquisition and execution of funded research projects.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Conducting independent research in future cloud computing technologies, resulting in academic publications in peer-reviewed international journals and/or conferences. Potential research topics include green cloud computing, data management in cloud computing, security and privacy in cloud computing, cloud services for machine learning, sovereignty of cloud services, software engineering for cloud-based software, cloud-to-edge continuum.
  • Actively pursuing external funding for research, notably funding from research councils, national as well as European.
  • Participation in and management of research projects with academia and industry.
  • Further development of the research group’s existing research and project portfolio in research infrastructures (e.g., Scientific LargeScale Infrastructure for Computing/Communication Experimental Studies (SLICES)).
  • Actively contributing to and developing national and international research networks and other forms of cooperation, in particular on EU level (e.g., European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), International Data Spaces Association (IDSA)).
  • Developing, coordinating, and teaching courses in the BSc and MSc programmes of the University of Amsterdam.
  • Supervising BSc and MSc theses and tutoring students; co-supervising PhD theses.
  • Actively contributing to the development and improvement of the educational programmes of the department.
  • Taking part in committees and working groups and carrying out departmental administrative tasks as directed.

Requirements
Specific Requirements

Your experience and profile:

  • PhD in Computer Science or a related field;
  • committed researcher, demonstrated by publications in international refereed academic journal and conference publications;
  • a motivational teacher, with an encouraging teaching style;
  • readiness to participate in interdisciplinary cooperation;
  • capability to initiate and organise new research by identifying innovative research themes;
  • professional command of English;
  • possession of the University Teaching Qualification (Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs, BKO), or the willingness to obtain it within two years after the start of the employment;

Experience in acquiring and executing funded research projects, experience in PhD supervision, high standing in the international research community (evidenced by, e.g., program committee membership or invited talks in leading international conferences), and a network of connections with relevant researchers, practitioners, and professional associations in the Netherlands or other EU countries are considered an advantage.


Additional Information
Benefits

We offer a temporary employment contract for 38 hours per week for a period of 18 months. The preferred starting date is to be discussed. A permanent contract follows if we assess your performance positive.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience, ranges between € 4,332 to € 6,737 (scale 11-12). UvA additionally offers an extensive package of secondary benefits, including 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%. The UFO profile UD2 or UD1 is applicable. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Universities of the Netherlands is applicable.
