Post/s of Full-Time Research Support Officer IV

With Special Focus on Surface Engineering of a biodegradable magnesium alloy

Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering

 

The Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering seeks to engage a Research Support Officer IV (Post Doc with minimum 3 years full-time equivalent research experience post PhD qualification) to assist in the various research and development activities of the Department in the field of material science, and to provide specific and generic administrative and technical support to the Department. The selected candidate may also be required to work on other duties as may be required by the Department, support students and staff making use of equipment at the Materials Engineering Laboratory and other Laboratories/places as required. The selected candidate is expected to carry out related administrative work as necessary.

 

Applicants are required to be / have:

  • a Bachelor’s degree, in Materials Engineering or Mechanical engineering;
  • a Master’s degree in Materials Engineering or Mechanical Engineering;
  • a PhD degree in Materials Engineering or Mechanical Engineering;
  • a minimum of 3 years full-time equivalent research experience post PhD qualification;
  • experience in the field of metallurgy;
  • experience and competence in characterisation techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray diffraction;  
  • at least one year full-time equivalent of experience in advanced stress analysis using classical and numerical mechanics methods such as finite element analysis (FEA);
  • at least one year full-time equivalent of experience in biomedical orthopaedic implant design;
  • good English written communication skills and academic writing skills;
  • self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • able to organise and prioritise tasks within the project timeline to meet interim deadlines.
  •  

    Experience in metallurgy and material characterisation will be considered as an asset.

    The full-time post is for a period of 2 months and will be expected to work 40 hours per week.  The initial remuneration for the Research Support Officer IV will be a pro-rata of Euro 45,511 per annum (inclusive of any cost of living).

    Further Information

     

    The Research Support Officer IV (Post Doc with minimum 3 years full-time equivalent research experience post PhD qualification)  will report to Prof. Inġ Joseph Buhagiar. The main duties and responsibilities of the appointee will consist of carrying out research and project management duties in relation to Surface Engineering of a biodegradable magnesium alloy, including:  
  • performing research as directed by the principal investigator and key experts;
  • producing deliverables and related reports within the stipulated time frames;
  • taking part in the submission of local and international research proposals to sustain related research;
  • keeping detailed progress reports;
  • endeavouring in generating technical and scientific conference/journal papers;
  • assisting in the dissemination process via workshops, seminars and other events;
  • travelling and attending meetings/conferences locally and abroad as necessary; and
  • performing any other tasks as instructed by the principal investigator and key experts.

    The appointee is also expected to support the research, development and other activities of Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering and their activities, and supporting a range of equipment including, but not limited to the potentiostat/galvanostat/ZRA which are particularly suitable for applications in coating development and corrosion testing.

     

    The selected candidate may be required to travel overseas to participate in practical/scientific training courses and/or events related to the work and that contribute to the enhancement of the technical services provided by the labs.

     

    The appointee is expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.

     

    The selection procedure will involve:

     

  • scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed as supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);

  • an interview and/or extended interview.
