  • Applications are invited for the post of Research Support Officer I to carry out duties in relation to the Malta Quaternary Palaeoecologies Project (MQP) and ERC-funded ISLANDLAB project (the latter commencing in December 2022) funded by the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology at the University of Malta. The project is coordinated by Prof. Eleanor Scerri and Prof. Nicholas Vella (Department of Classics and Archaeology, Faculty of Arts, University of Malta). The Research Support Officer may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Classics and Archaeology within the Faculty of Arts.
  • Applicants should be in possession of an undergraduate degree in Archaeology, with experience in flotation of environmental samples, curation of finds, and possess strong organisational skills.

    Project Description Further Information

    1. The Department of Classics and Archaeology is pleased to announce a vacancy for a Research Support Officer I. The position will be for 3 years. The position is part of the Malta Quaternary Palaeoecologies project (MQP), conducted in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology in Jena, Germany, and the forthcoming ERC funded ISLANDLAB project, involving the continued collaboration of the same entities. The MQP and ISLANDLAB projects are conducting research investigating the Quaternary fauna and environments of the Maltese Islands.

    2. The candidate’s job will focus on supporting the scientific research being carried out by the projects:

    • Conduct and supervise flotation of excavation sediment samples
    • Label, organise and curate samples, including floats, sinks and pre-float sediment samples
    • Collect samples (e.g. bones, sediments, pottery) when required to do so and send samples to relevant scientific partners
    • Conduct searches and/or research for samples/documentation at partner institutions
    • Conduct relevant research for scientific papers to support project principal investigators (PIs) when required to do so
    • Be responsible for sending samples/any relevant documentation or packages by courier to scientific partners
    • Undertake project related administration, including cataloguing finds, marking/inking finds and maintaining related spreadsheets, and ordering of required stationary and small equipment
    • Maintain good and regular channels of communication and reporting to project PIs

    3.The appointee will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.

    4.The selection procedure will involve:

    a. scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);

    b.shortlisting; and

    c.an interview and/or extended interview.

    7. The post is for a period of 3 years, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
