Two postdoctoral positions in Galactic Archeology focusing on dwarf galaxies

Updated: 26 days ago
Deadline: 30 Apr 2024

Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral positions to work with Ása Skúladóttir at the University of Florence on the topic of Galactic Archaeology. The project aims at understanding the satellite dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way, from their formation to their disruption, by exploiting spectra of individual stars in these systems.

This will be done both through participation in smaller independent projects, as well as through collaborations and participation with the 4DWARFS survey (PI: Skúladóttir). 4DWARFS is a large spectroscopic survey of dwarf galaxies and stellar streams, with science verification planned in spring 2025, and start of survey in summer 2025. The selected post-docs will be brought in as members of the full 4MOST collaboration, and will be contributing to the execution and scientific exploitation of 4DWARFS.

The selected candidates will work on one or more of the following:

1) Chemical abundance analysis of stellar spectra in dwarf galaxies and/or stellar streams, with emphasis on metal-poor stars and the neutron-capture elements.

2) Chemical evolution modelling of dwarf galaxies.

3) Dynamics of dwarf galaxies and/or characterisation of their stellar streams.

Candidates with experience in spectroscopy and/or Galactic Archeology are especially encouraged to apply. The start of contract is envisioned as the 1st of September 2024, and the position is offered for 3 years, with the possibility of a 1 year extension. The positions include a very generous travel budget.

Applicants are required to fill out an online form here (button in upper right corner changes language between Italian and English). The signed form should be sent in pdf form to [email protected] , including in pdf format: 1) A scan of a valid ID; 2) CV; 3) List of publications, and  a copy of a few highlighted works. The applicants must have a valid PhD in astronomy before the application deadline of 30th of April, 2024.

Interested candidates are very strongly encouraged to contact Ása Skúladóttir through [email protected] , who will gladly answer any questions regarding the application process.
