Offer Description

Project title:
Sustainable Materials for Environmental Remediation, Sensing and Catalysis
Research program:
The research activity will focus on the development of materials capable of combining high functional properties with high environmental sustainability far applications in pollutant removal, catalysis, optical sensing, and large-area electronics. The ultimate goal of the research wil1be to create innovative pollutant adsorbents, optical sensors (plasmonic or dielectric nanoantennas, metamaterials) far use in Raman spectroscopy, electronic sensors, which can be implemented in flexible and cost-effective devices, and catalysts far pollutant degradation or the production of energy carriers (e.g., hydrogen or methanol), leveraging the principles of "system chemistry." These materials will be created by combining simple components, whose interaction will result in the emergence of different properties within the composite material compared to each constituent considered individually. Furthermore, the functionality of these materials will be made modifiable through the application of external stimuli, to obtain dynamic and adaptive materials, inspired by biological systems.
In line with the Strategie Plan of University of Brescia, which emphasizes scientific and technological developmeht characterized by full sustainability, particular attention will be given to the environmental impact of the chemical processes underlying the preparation of the systems under study, using the basic concepts of "green chemistry" to develop circular and sustainable production models.
The research activity will mainly focus on the synthesis of nanomaterials, the use of chemical characterization techniques such as vibrational spectroscopies or electrochemical techniques, (photo)catalysis, and the development of materials from scraps and waste.
The results obtained must be disseminateci to the scientific community through the publication of scientific articles in international scientific journals and participation in national and international conferences and congresses.
The researcher will also be required to formulate funding proposals for competitive projects, both at the national and international levels, and to participate in research projects funded to develop collaborations involving Italian and foreign industria! partners and research institutions.
The Department of Information Engineering (DII) will be the primary workplace for the researcher, and ali activities performed will be synergistic with the research themes at the core of the department: the development of new materials (nano- and meso-structured, metamaterials, and metasurfaces) and devices aimed at creating sensory and actuation components for applications in large-area electronics, imaging, optical sensing, and energy conversion.
