Along with the development of its new Strategic Plan 2024-2029, Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) has been potentiating Research Data services, aimed at enabling new data-driven scientific approaches beside traditional experimental research. Moreover, IIT is one of the partners of the Genomic Data Infrastructure (GDI) project, whose main goal is to enable access to genomic and related phenotypic and clinical data across Europe, by establishing a federated, sustainable, and secure infrastructure to share the data. In line with these targets, to guarantee that genomic data is professionally managed at all stages of the research cycle, data stewardship competences must be developed and integrated, to support scientists to keep the quality, integrity, and access arrangements of data and metadata in compliance with the applicable law.
YOUR TEAM
We are looking for a Data Steward to work in close collaboration with researchers in the field of genomics, within the Genomic Science Research Line in the context of the GDI European project. The Data Steward will be integrated in a newly established RDM & Data Stewardship team under the Research Organization Directorate. This job will provide you with a unique opportunity to play a role in the design and application of innovative data management methods and tools to produce Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) data in this specific research domain.
As a professional figure that bridges data management and research, you will enter a truly interdisciplinary team of people, where data stewards, IT specialists, legal experts, and researchers contribute each with their own competences to the uptake of the FAIR principles in research.
YOUR JOB
You will contribute to develop FAIR data practices within the genomics research domain and to stimulate their uptake. Your main tasks will be:
·Research Data Management in the genomics domain: help relevant stakeholders (scientists, IT engineers, etc.) to identify community practices and solutions for FAIR data management in the genomics domain; be involved in the design and implementation of institutional workflows and practices ensuring quality and FAIRness of (meta)data, by following guidelines developed in the context of GDI and related projects.
·Participation to the development of the Italian Genomic Data Infrastructure: liaise with other data professionals and researchers, through participation to (inter)national networks.
·Responsible of Data stewardship for the Center of Genomic Science (CGS-Milan): act as a technical interface between scientists and IT managers, establish shared protocols for big data transfer and long- and short-term storage, help in big data transfer, storage management on shared memory architectures.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- PhD in a relevant field [e.g. Physics – Biology – Genomics - Informatics],
- Excellent knowledge of RDM and the FAIR guiding principles for scientific data stewardship,
- Understanding of coding and software development practices,
- Excellent knowledge of shell scripting languages,
- Good knowledge of practices for big data transfer, short-term and long-term storage,
- Capability of working on computer clusters and shared memory architectures,
- Enjoy working collaboratively, also with diverse stakeholder groups, but also comfortable with taking initiative and work independently,
- Excellent communication skills,
- Good command of English.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS
- Previous experience in genomics research,
- Previous knowledge of data modeling, standards, repositories,
- Previous coding experience,
- Excellent people skills, cultural and organizational sensitivity and ability to motivate and inspire others.
