Applications are invited for a Temporary part-time post of a UCD Research Fellow within UCD School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy
MacAirH is funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland. It will monitor, compare, model and analyse the in-use performance of heat pumps (HP) in retrofitted buildings, while also investigating other impacting building parameters. It will identify optimum operational settings and controls, and return guidance documents for best practice, system sizing and optimum control
MacAirH will monitor a robust sample size of geographically dispersed air-to-water (with some exhaust air) heat pumps, in primarily domestic (with optional nondomestic) buildings pre and post retrofit. Comparison will be made with monitored traditional boiler-based systems and previously analysed new and retrofit buildings.
The vision of MacAirH is to uncover key operational lessons as Ireland embarks on the unprecedented mass-market implementation of heat pumps in retrofitted buildings. It will achieve this by following a developed monitoring methodology in over 50 already recruited buildings, mining the monitored data and furthering analysis using developed and validated HP and emitter models. The project will not just investigate HPs in isolation but will also associate HP performance with the building fabric, air tightness and importantly the occupants. It will look at the full life cycle of HPs, from carbon and costing perspectives.
The project builds on an established, effective collaboration of academics with energy agencies, city and county councils. It will develop guidance documents and compliant datasets for online publication, as well as disseminating the research widely through national and international industry and scientific academic publications.
The purpose of the role is to deliver a specific research project. The role allows the Research Fellow the professional development opportunity to demonstrate the capacity for independent and self-directed research and scholarship and the management of a research team. The role allows the Fellow to assemble a portfolio of independent achievement and render themselves competitive for tenured academic positions or senior scientific roles in industry.
In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:
- Project planning and stakeholder engagement
- Lifecycle costing of heat pumps installation
- working with project postdoc, project partners and associated PhD student to analyse chosen buildings and mine data for interesting results,
- analysis and concluding on monitoring output and performance of heat pumps in homes buildings,
- report on findings in SEAI deliverables.
Salary: €56,932 - €74,323 per annum pro rata
Appointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experience
Closing date: 17:00hrs (local Irish time) on 27th June 2022
Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 17:00hrs (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.
UCD do not require assistance from Recruitment Agencies. Any CV's submitted by Recruitment Agencies will be returned.
