Post-doc Level 1 or 2, Temp

Updated: about 10 hours ago
Location: Ireland,
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 21 Jun 2024

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 or 2 within UCD School of History.

This position is within an ERC Consolidator project being led by Dr Irial Glynn (Principal Investigator - PI). The project is a 5-year study of the global history of boat refugees since the 1940s (SOS). SOS will focus on refugees’ journeys, paying particular attention to what occurred at sea and at offshore detention centres. The central research question framing the project is: how did notions of solidarity, sovereignty and sanctuary influence the experience and reception of boat refugees across time and space? The research team will be guided by the related sub-question: who hindered and who helped boat refugees at sea, and why? The project aims to place boat refugees at the heart of the analysis.

The PostDoc will create and develop their own case study for the duration of their post as agreed with the PI. It is envisaged that the case study will concentrate principally on the experience and reception of boat refugees on one sea or ocean over a certain manageable timespan with reference to certain receiver states (e.g. Jewish refugees in the Mediterranean in the 1940s, Vietnamese boat refugees on the South China Sea in the 1970s and 1980s, Cuban and Haitian boat refugees on the Caribbean in the 1980s and 1990s, various refugees on the Indian Ocean or the Mediterranean or the Gulf of Aden since the 1990s). It is expected that candidates will have linguistic competency in the most important languages associated with their case study. Comparative case studies are also welcome, but not mandatory.

Post Doc Level 1 Salary Range: €43,908 - €50,302

Post Doc Level 2 Salary Range: €51,677 - €56,202

Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Closing date: 12:00 noon (local Irish time) on 21st of June 2024.

Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 12:00 noon (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.

The PD1 position is intended for early stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time. If you have already completed your PD1 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD1, or you are an external applicant whose total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 4 years, you should not apply and should refer to PD2 posts instead.

The PD2 post is intended for researchers that have completed PD1. As with the PD1, if you have already completed your PD2 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD2, or your total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 6 years, you should not apply and should refer to Research Fellow posts instead.
