Offer Description

A Ph.D. position in Bioorganic/Organic Chemistry at the University of Iceland is open for applications. The position is funded by a three-year grant from the Icelandic Research Fund. We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD student to synthesize stable radicals, both for incorporation into nucleic acids and for improving the sensitivity of nuclear magentic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.

Main tasks

The projectPersistent organic biradicals for biophysical studies

Organic radicals have numerous applications, ranging from polymer chemistry to spectroscopic studies. We have extensive experience in our laboratory in the synthesis of radicals as reporter groups for electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and incorporation of such labels into specific positions of DNA and RNA. In recent years, we have been working on preparation of biradicals for increasing the sensitivity of NMR spectroscopy through the new and exciting field of Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP).

The aim of this project is two-fold. First, to use the tools of organic synthesis to incorporate stable radicals into nucleic acids for studies by EPR spectroscopy. Second, to synthesize stable biradicals with the aim of further improving the sensitivity of NMR spectroscopy through DNP, in particular at very high fields. These studies will be carried out in collaboration with scientists in France, Switzerland and USA, which offers the candidate a possibility for short research visits abroad.

The research group

The supervisor will be Dr. Snorri Th. Sigurdsson, Professor of Chemistry at the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences (https://scholar.google.com.br/citations?user=Ao9HoBUAAAAJ&hl=en ). The research group is located at the Science Institute of the University of Iceland. Information about The Sigurdsson Group can be found at our website  (https://snorrisi.hi.is ), including the details of our research activities in the list of publications.
