Offer Description

Saarland University is a campus university with a pronounced international focus and strong research profile. With a large number of other external research institutes in the vicinity of the university and dedicated support for collaborative research projects, Saarland University is an ideal location for innovation and technology transfer. As part of its continuing drive to expand research excellence and in light of its close involvement with the expansion of the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS), Saarland University is looking to further strengthen its position as a leading interdisciplinary research centre. Key areas of research are located at the interface of medicine, bioinformatics, pharmaceutical science and drug development, with research being conducted both in the university’s Faculty of Medicine and in its core research field ‘NanoBioMed’.

To further strengthen their cooperative ties, Saarland University and HIPS are inviting applications for the following position in the Faculty of Medicine to commence at the earliest opportunity:

W3 Professorship in Structural Biology (m/f/x; Reference: W2456)

The position is a permanent (tenured) public sector appointment.

The professorship is intended as a bridge between the Faculty of Medicine and the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS). To this end, the professorship will also be affiliated with and supported by the HIPS with additional funding provided for scientific staff and research equipment.

The successful candidate will be expected to use cryogenic electron microscopy to generate high-resolution, three-dimensional images of protein complexes and membrane proteins to yield information relevant to target validation of existing drugs in development and, through close cooperative ties with HIPS and Saarland University researchers in the area of bioinformatics, strengthen the areas of structure-based drug design, action mechanisms of antibacterial agents, and data-driven drug development. The person appointed to this position will have an excellent publication record and will be an expert in the field of structural biology, particularly with respect to cryogenic electron microscopy. Within the next five years, the appointee will be expected to establish a leading international research group in the area of structure-driven drug development including the structural elucidation of small molecules.

We are looking for an individual with an established international reputation in their field and an outstanding record in both teaching and research who will contribute significantly to the progress of ongoing projects and will play a key role in establishing new interdisciplinary and interfaculty collaborative projects.
