Offer Description

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is an internationally established university with 160 years of history that is rooted in the Bauhaus tradition and unites art and design, science, and technology. This approach characterises the faculties of Architecture and Urbanism, Civil Engineering, Art and Design, and Media. In addition to their disciplinary functions, the faculties are also strongly commit-ted to interdisciplinary collaboration and to the interpermeation between art, science, and practice.

The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism as well as the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are currently inviting suitable candidates to apply for the full-time position of

W1-Professorship (Tenure Track to W3)

starting 1st April 2025.

We are looking for a person with a broad professional background to represent the field in research and teaching. Prerequisites are

  • a university degree in (civil) engineering, architecture, urban planning, industrial engineering (construction), economics, or a comparable degree programme
  • pedagogical aptitude, demonstrated, for example, through university teaching experience and
  • a particular ability for academic work, which is usually demonstrated by the outstanding quality of a doctoral degree in a field related to the professorship.

As part of the relevant Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes of the faculties, the professorship teaches the basic phases of project development, knowledge of contracting, economic knowledge, and tools for prospective civil engineers, construction managers, and architects. It is involved in the further establishment of international degree programmes of the faculties. Lectures will be held in German and English.

The dedication »Project Development and Construction Economics« refers to the need for planning and engineering effectiveness for projects on a larger scale at neighbourhood and urban development levels in teaching and research. The professorship thus forms an interface between the real estate industry, construction, and overall public planning. In this sense, the advertised position encompasses not only project development and economics, but in particular also addresses issues of risk assessment, sustainability and acceptance. The professorship will serve to further develop sustainable project development approaches, such as the life cycle approach or similar concepts, taking into account ecological and socio-economic aspects. It teaches the economic knowledge relevant to engineering and architectural training for the processing of project planning and project conception.

In addition, teaching and research ideally focus on one or more of the following areas of sustainable project development:

  • climate and environmentally friendly assessment concepts,
  • circular economy (for example the application of re-use concepts),
  • processes of conversion planning,
  • forms of construction industry and real estate industry that are committed to the common good, including issues of participation and stakeholder management,
  • land issues and ownership.

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar attaches great importance to student support and expects its teaching staff to be adequately present at the university. Participation in university self-administration is expected. The willingness to acquire third-party funds, also within the framework of joint applications, is a prerequisite. Initial experience in the acquisition and realisation of interdisciplinary research projects, possibly in a supporting role, is advantageous. Leadership skills and organisational skills are a further advantage for suitability for the position. Non-university experience in connection with the development, planning and/or realisation of buildings is valuable.

We are looking for a person who can bridge the disciplines of architecture and civil engineering. They will combine their excellence at this interface with an openness to other subject cultures and, recognising the responsibility of science and art towards society, will contribute to the further development and shaping of the university. Participation in cross-faculty co-operations and interdisciplinary study programmes is therefore expected.

The general recruitment requirements are regulated in § 89 of the Thuringian Higher Education Act (ThürHG). The professorship will initially be filled for a fixed term of three years. Following a positive interim evaluation, an extension of three years is planned. On the basis of a further positive evaluation, the position will be transferred to a W3 professorship after six years without a new call for applications.

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar places great importance on diversity and equal opportunities. We are committed to maintaining a family-friendly and non-discriminatory working environment and to pursuing a human resources policy which promotes gender equality and diversity. For this reason, we encourage applications from people from a wide variety of backgrounds and with diverse ranges of experience and biographies. The university’s strategic goals include increasing the proportion of women in teaching and research, and we therefore expressly welcome applications from qualified female academics. Equally qualified people with disabilities will be given preferential consideration.

Please submit your application, as a PDF-document (one document, max. 15 MB), or by post, including the usual documentation and the code number A+U/JP-03/24, by 30th April 2024 to:
