The Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Philosophy and Philology, invites applications for the position of
University Professor of Theoretical Philosophy with a Focus on the Philosophy of Science
to be filled at the earliest possible date. Salary grade W2 LBesG | Civil Servant (tenured)

Tasks and Expectations:
We are looking for a candidate who can represent the field of theoretical philosophy with a focus on the philosophy of science in its full scope in research as well as in teaching in the Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Master of Arts in Philosophy as well as the Bachelor of Education in Philosophy/Ethics and Master of Education in Philosophy/Ethics programs. Additionally, participation in academic self-administration is expected.

The successful candidate’s area of specialization is philosophy of science, incorporating research on the general philosophy of science as well as the philosophical contemplation of specific sciences. We expect course offerings covering a reasonable breadth of topics in theoretical philosophy, focusing on the philosophy of science and taking into account the needs of teaching degree students, as well as involvement in regular lectures on the basics of theoretical philosophy and modern logic.

We expect the successful candidate to acquire third-party funding for their own projects as well as to participate in collaborative projects, for instance in the Theoretical Philosophy area of specialization, at the Mainz Department of Philosophy as a whole, and in further subject-specific and interdisciplinary research associations at JGU or within the association of Rhine-Main universities.

The state of Rhineland-Palatinate and JGU are committed to the close personal mentoring of students and therefore expect instructors to attend and participate in academic life at JGU. A cooperative, team-oriented and proactive work attitude, strong communication skills, and the willingness to assume responsibility – including further professional development in accordance with JGU’s leadership guidelines – is also expected.

Skills/Qualifications

Requirements:
In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in Section 49 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.

We expect applicants to have a relevant, qualified doctorate (preferably in philosophy) as well as additional outstanding academic records illustrated by a number of further publications which, as a whole, document expertise in the field of the philosophy of science. Research achievements should be pertinent to international academic debates in terms of content and level of argumentation and should preferably have been published in excellent international peer-reviewed journals or by respected academic publishing companies with international visibility.

The candidate must provide proof of teaching and research experience in a wide variety of topics in the field of theoretical philosophy with a focus on the philosophy of science, thereby demonstrating their ability to fulfill the stated tasks.

Experience in collaborative subject-specific and interdisciplinary research projects, applying for third-party funding, international professional networking, and academic self-administration is very desirable. If applicable, proof must be provided.

Applicants should have German language skills that must be sufficient to teach in German after three years in the position at the latest (goal: C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference). The ability and readiness to teach in English is very welcome.
