Thesis: Sensor-based control of the laser powder bed fusion process

In cooperation with the department of Laser Technology at RWTH LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the "Laser Powder Bed Fusion" department. The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT is Europe's leading center for contract research and development in the field of laser technology. In close co-operation with partners from industry and research, the Fraunhofer ILT is working on the further development of the additive manufacturing process Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF). With LPBF, metallic components with almost any complex geometry can be additively manufactured using a layer-by-layer structure. The wide range of applications includes components in the automotive industry, aerospace and medical technology.

What you will do

  • Implementation of sensor-based process control on an LPBF system
  • Independent planning and execution of scientific experiments in the laboratory
  • Analysis of sensor signals and metallographic examination of sample bodies
  • Documentation and presentation of research results

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying industrial engineering, mechanical engineering or a comparable engineering-scientific degree programme
  • Enjoy working independently and on your own responsibility
  • Initial knowledge of control engineering and signal processing is advantageous, but not essential 
  • A good command of German and English is essential
