Our Bremen spirit is expressed in the courage to dare new things, in supportive cooperation, in respect and appreciation for each other. In Faculty 12: Education and Educational Sciences, a tenure-track professorship is available in the subject of Education Science.

Tenure-track professorship (f/m/d)

- Appointment W1 with tenure-track to W2 -

for the subject area

Education Science with a focus on Media Education and Media Literacy in Childhood and Adolescence

- Reference number: JP931/24

The professorship will initially be filled on a temporary basis for a period of three years, subject to fulfilment of the general civil service requirements. After an interim evaluation with orientation character, it will be extended for another three years. Assuming a positive final evaluation after six years at the latest, the appointment will be for a lifetime professorship (W2). To allow sufficient time for your scientific development, the extent of teaching duties will increase step-wise over time.

We are looking for an early career postdoctoral researcher who can already demonstrate some experience in research and teaching and whose research can be expected to develop national and international visibility.

Your dissertation deals with processes of socialisation or education, with special consideration of the pedagogical and educational implications of digitality and mediatisation. Your research focus during your position as tenure-track professor includes theoretical, methodological and empirical aspects of questions on media education for children and adolescents in diverse educational contexts and/or challenging life situations, especially socio-economic disadvantage. Basic digital education in schools and schooling in a culture that is shaped and shapable by digital-media, respectively, are of particular importance.

You have completed a degree in education science or a teaching degree with a focus on pedagogy and a doctorate in the above-mentioned subject area and have already gained initial further academic experience (e.g. demonstrable collaboration in externally funded projects, relevant publications on current topics in media education, (co-)organisation of an academic conference or similar). Another prerequisite is pedagogical-didactic aptitude.

We offer opportunities to cooperate within the profile focus areas of our department - especially “Digitalization” and “Participation, Inequality, Migration and Diversity as Conditions of Education”. In addition, you are invited to participate in the thematic committee “Teacher Education in a Digital World” of the Centre for Teacher Education and Educational Research (ZfLB), the Lab “Media & Education” at ZeMKI as well as with colleagues in education science and subject didactics in the department.

In teaching, the professorship is involved in Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in teacher education as well as study programmes on non-formal education. Teaching experience on university level as well as the willingness to engage in further training is expected, as well as innovative integration and thematisation of digital media in your courses. As a rule, lectures are to be held in German. If applicable, the ability to do so shall be proven by the time of the interim evaluation. The duties also include participation in examinations, as well as advising and supervising students (e.g. in the context of theses, projects, etc.). The University of Bremen supports the professional development of interdisciplinary competences, among other things, through personnel development and the Centre for Multimedia in Teaching (ZMML), and welcomes active participation in innovation processes (e.g. programme and profile development in the department, participation in academic self-administration).

The appointment is based on §§ 18 and 18a BremHG and § 117 BremBG. Applicants who obtained a doctorate in Bremen should have changed university after obtaining their doctorate or have worked outside the University of Bremen for at least two years. Independent of the temporal distance between the doctorate and the previous phases of employment at universities and research institutions, the doctorate and previous phases of employment at universities and research institutions together should not have lasted more than six years (see § 117 BremBG).

The University of Bremen offers a variety of services to support new staff members, such as a Welcome Centre, Childcare and dual-career options as well as offers for staff development and continuing education.

The university strives to increase the proportion of women in the academic sector. It has received several awards in programmes to promote gender equality and is certified as a Family-Friendly University.

Women Academics are strongly encouraged to apply. International applications and applications from academics with a migration background are expressly welcomed. Severely disabled applicants with basically the same professional and personal qualifications will be given priority.

Please send your application including your CV, lists of classes taught on university level, contributions to conferences, publications and a copy of your dissertation (in electronic form) by April 24th, 2024 quoting the above reference number to:
