Offer Description
At the Departmentof Church Music and Musicology’s Chair of Musicology, at the University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities, there is a position which is expected to be available from 1 April 2024, subject to budgetary regulations, for a part-time (65%)
Teaching and Research Assistant.
The fixed-term contract is until 31 March 2027. Payment will be made according to pay group 13 TV-L Wissenschaft if the personal and pay group qualifications are met.
The position is part of the research project "The Production of Popular Music in Germany and Austria, 1930-1950" (PopPrints), an international consortium in co-operation with the Paris Lodron University Salzburg and the Anton Bruckner Private University Linz, which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).
The project examines the production of popular music during the Second World War by focusing on music publishing, film and song production, revue and operetta theatre and the staging of the body. The project combines the research fields of cultural history of music, music history of National Socialism, Austrofascism and the post-war period with approaches from institutional history, network research, media and performance studies (further information can be found on the project website at http://popprints.eu ).
The sub-project being managed by Greifswald focuses on the possibilities for creative agency in musical theatre. The aim is to use music collections, theatre and private archives to investigate the repertoire in revue and operetta theatres in German-speaking countries and its reception between a cosmopolitan and commercial orientation and the changing networks of their actors after 1933 due to migration and exile. Archive studies are planned at revue and operetta theatres, e.g. in Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, Graz, Linz and Vienna. There will also be close collaboration with the State Library Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Schwerin to research the music theatre collection and individual estates with popular music from the first half of the 20th century.
In Greifswald and within the international research project, the future research fellow will profit from regular professional and personal exchange in a team that includes experts for the topic as well as two other doctoral candidates and two postdocs. In addition to regular project workshops, lectures at international congresses, joint publications and the communication of research results beyond the academic field are planned. The University of Greifswald also offers support for the further qualification of doctoral candidates.
Job Description:
- Research within the framework of the project (field work in archives, evaluation of sources, preparation of results for conferences, publications as well as for public dissemination)
- Tasks in research management (in particular support in the organisation of workshops and workflows within the framework of the international collaboration)
- Supervision of student assistants
Job Specification:
- Postgraduate university degree (Master's or equivalent) in musicology or a related discipline
- Interest in research in the field of popular music in Germany and Austria between 1930 and 1950, with a focus on creative agency and mobilities of actors in popular music theatre life
- Excellent knowledge of German and English (level C1) as well as another foreign language (level B2)
Desirable:
- Initial research experience in the fields of cultural and social history of modern music
- Interest in innovative methodological approaches
- The candidate should be self-motivated, have good communication skills and a proven ability to interact effectively and work productively in an interdisciplinary team.
