The Römisch-Germanische Zentralmuseum (RGZM), a foundation under public law, is an internationally operative Leibniz Research Institute and Museum for Archaeology located in Mainz, Germany.
For the Archaeological Research Centre and Museum for Human Behavioural Evolution MONREPOS, located in Neuwied, we seek to immediately fill
a Scientist position (full time) in Pleistocene Archaeology (m/f/d)
(EG 13 TV-L)
The length of the appointment is 6 years (3 + 3) with an option for a permanent employment after a successful evaluation.
About the RGZMThe RGZM is a globally operating archaeological research institute and museum of the Leibniz association with a headquarter in Mainz and two other locations in Neuwied and Mayen. Since its foundation in 1852 it dedicates itself to the material legacy of humankind from the Pleistocene to the Middle Ages aiming to understand human behavior and action as well as the development and transformation of societies. To this end, the RGZM maintains in addition to laboratories for archaeological science, traceology and restoration a variety of research infrastructures, including collections, one of the largest specialist libraries for archaeology in Europe and extensive archives. This infrastructure supports research, teaching, and knowledge transfer at national and international levels. As Leibniz-Research Museum knowledge transfer via publications, events, exhibitions and educational programs is a central part of the RGZMs working program.
About MONREPOSThe MONREPOS Archaeological Research Centre and Museum for Human Behavioural Evolution is a part of the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum (RGZM), Leibniz Research Institute for Archaeology. Situated at Monrepos Castle near Neuwied in the Central Rhineland of Germany, the Centre examines the historical processes of the evolution of hominin behaviour through the contextualized and interdisciplinary study of Pleistocene and early Holocene material remains. Research currently focuses on 3 main topics:
- Hominin behavioural strategies in interglacial environments
- Hominin diet
- Organisation of social units in the Upper and Late Palaeolithic and Mesolithic
Department languages are German and English.
Your area of responsibility- independent planning and execution of research projects and excavations in Pleistocene Archaeology
- applications for third-party funds
- publications in peer-reviewed journals
- active participation in international conferences
- contribute to outreach activities of the institute
You have a doctoral degree in Palaeolithic/Early Holocene Archaeology, preferably have a focus on the Lower and/or Middle Palaeolithic, a track record on innovative approaches to the field and a strong record in publications in peer-reviewed journals.
The ideal candidate has experience with third-party research projects and collaboration in international excavations. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and coordination skills are needed. Experience in teaching and knowledge of German would be desirable.
