Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon operates an outstation at DESY in Hamburg to provide access to highly brilliant synchrotron radiation within its German Engineering Materials Science Center (GEMS). At the PETRA III synchrotron radiation source, Hereon jointly operates the High Energy Materials Science Beamline (HEMS, P07), the Imaging Beamline (IBL, P05) the Nanofocus Endstation of Micro- and Nanofocus X-ray Scattering Beamline (MINAXS, P03) and the White Beam Beamline (WINE, P61) along with supporting lab spaces.

Our dedicated Imaging Beamline P05 with endstations for micro- and nanotomography as well as the microtomography station at the High Energy Beamline P07 are optimized for material science and life science applications. They are actively used by members of various scientific fields and within industrial cooperations. Their unique beam characteristics promote novel applications of tomographic techniques, ultra-fast in-situ measurements as well as highest spatial and density resolution by providing phase contrast methods and spatial resolutions down to 40 nm.

The upgrade of PETRA III into the diffraction limited storage ring PETRA IV is planned to begin in 2030. Following the success of our involvement at PETRA III, Hereon will build and operate new beamlines at PETRA IV, among which will be two successors to our present imaging instruments at P05 and P07. These future imaging beamlines will make use of the unique characteristics of a diffraction limited source. They will provide full-field imaging with spatial resolutions ranging seamlessly from the nanometer to the micrometer regime and with a strong focus on materials science applications, thus operating in a combined energy range from 10 keV to 200 keV and with sufficient space and flexibility to accommodate complex sample environments. The scope of requirements and specifications for the beamline is readily defined and the technical design process is about to begin.

The appointment is initially limited to 3 years and may be extended. Equal opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy. We would therefore strongly encourage qualified women to apply for the position.
