Job description:

The rising carbon dioxide (CO2) content in the atmosphere is a climate challenge and also affects the maritime environment. Seawater can contain up to 150times higher CO2 concentration compared to air, and thus, brings oceans as a  CO2 Source into play (Direct Ocean Capture, DOC). The aim of the project is to investigate and develop further a novel CO2 capture process from liquids similar to seawater. For this, a laboratory test bench comprised of a modified membrane destillation unit for the CO2 capture and an electrodialysis unit for the CO2 release will be setup and investigated. The experimental results will be complemented by simulations of the overall process and based on these strategies for optimised operation and data for a techno-economic assessment obtained.

Your tasks will be:

  • Setup and experimental investigation of a unit for the CO2 capture from seawater-type liquids
  • Simulation of the processes and the DOC system
  • Development of operation strategies
  • Techno-economic assessment of the overall system
  • Analysis and compilation of the research results and their publication

Beside the scientific work, you have the opportunity to do a doctorate.

This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany's largest scientific organisation.
