The National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg is one of the leading oncology centers of excellence in Germany. The founders and sponsors of the NCT are the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), Heidelberg University Hospital, the Heidelberg Medical Faculty and German Cancer Aid. The NCT Heidelberg has set itself the task of closely linking research and patient care, with a particular focus on patient-oriented, individualized cancer medicine. 

The Department of Medical Oncology at Heidelberg University Hospital treats outpatients and inpatients with solid tumor diseases. Through intensive research work, the latest findings from basic research are translated into clinical application. The focus here is on research into innovative therapeutic approaches and the development of new concepts in cancer treatment.

Tasks

  • Analyse multi-omics data including genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics, and proteomics, with a focus on microbiome analysis (metagenomics), single-cell sequencing, and spatial analysis for cancer research.
  • Develop and implement advanced computational pipelines and analytical workflows for processing, quality control, and analysis of high-throughput sequencing data, including the integration and interpretation of diverse omics datasets.
  • Apply state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools and algorithms to characterize microbial communities, assess taxonomic composition, and infer functional potential.
  • Apply machine learning and statistical modelling approaches to extract meaningful patterns and predictive biomarkers from large-scale omics datasets.
  • Contribute to the design and execution of research projects, including experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation.
  • Collaborate closely with cancer biologists, clinicians, and external partners to identify key biological insights and therapeutic targets.
  • Disseminate research findings through publications, presentations, and participation in scientific conferences.

Profile

  • Master/PhD degree or equivalent experience in bioinformatics, computational biology, medical informatics, computer science or similar background with a focus on bioinformatics or data science.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, MATLAB, Snakemake or Nextflow (or others) along with experience using bioinformatics tools and software packages.
  • Expertise in analyzing multi-omics data, particularly in the context of cancer research, with a strong foundation in microbiome analysis, single-cell sequencing, and spatial analysis.
  • Hands-on experience analysing microbiome and metagenomic data, with a strong understanding of sequencing technologies and data analysis techniques.
  • Expertise in advanced statistical and machine learning techniques to identify subpopulations of cells, infer gene expression dynamics, and uncover regulatory networks in cancer.
  • Experience with machine learning techniques, statistical analysis, and data visualization.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to troubleshoot data analysis challenges independently.
  • Demonstrated track record of scientific productivity, including publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.
  • Experience working with Linux and high-performance clusters (HPC).
