to be filled. Starting date is as soon as possible. The position is limited to three years.

The Department of Soil Physics ( Prof. Maier), Department of Crop Sciences, is seeking a highly motivated PhD student for the measurement and modeling of greenhouse gas fluxes in soils. The focus of this position is on the combination of measurement and modeling at the soil profile scale. The aim is to link and study different soil processes, including water and soil gas transport, and plant feedbacks (soil respiration, denitrification, root growth, solubilization and transport processes, methane uptake, and methanogenesis, plant water uptake, root growth, https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/forschung+/665454.html) .
A hands-on approach to solving experimental and technical challenges is important. The ideal candidate should have a solid background in soil science and physics, good practical and technical skills, and an affinity for working with data.
Requirements:

  • university degree in the natural sciences ( M.Sc), (preferably agriculture/ forestry/ geography/ geo-ecology or related)
  • motivation to work towards a doctorate
  • good physical understanding and interest
  • manual and technical skills and at the same time affinity to work with data
  • experience with sensors and analyses of soil, water or gas samples.
  • interest in field work and field trips; driver's license is a basic requirement.
  • good knowledge of written and spoken English, good knowledge of German
  • good knowledge of data processing and analysis, advantageous:
    • experience in data analysis with R or SAS or equivalent.
    • initial experience with finite element modeling, time series analysis, Bayesian statistics
  • interest in methodological development work, careful independent supervision of experiments
