Research associate (all genders welcome)

At the University of Göttingen -Public Law Foundation-, Abteilung für Bioklimatologie des Büsgen-Instituts, there is a position as

Research associate (all genders welcome)
Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L/100%

to be filled. Starting date is as soon as possible. The position is limited to 31.12.2026.

The position can either be full-time on the project (postdoc, 100%) or for qualification (PhD student, 65%).

The successful candidate will work on Carbon and non-carbon climate regulation functions of tropical landscapes in Indonesia. The project is led by Prof. Dr. Alexander Knohl and Prof. Dr. Dirk Hölscher. It is part of a group of five projects investigating conversion of tropical rainforest into rubber and oil palm plantations in Sumatra, Indonesia, focusing on landscape-scale changes in biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, and restoration pathways.

What you will do
The project aims to quantify CO2, H2O and energy fluxes of an oil palm plantation using the eddy covariance technique and to assess climate regulation functions of landscape mosaic using multi-spectral as well as thermal imagery from drones. From the results you will evaluate climate regulation functions from tropical landscapes and study their interactions with landscape type and structure. In this project the candidate’s tasks will include operating and analyzing eddy covariance measurements for H2O and CO2; analyzing multi-spectral and thermal images from airborne missions; presenting results nationally and internationally, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications you should have

  • Completed M.Sc. degree (Ph.D. preferred) in environmental science or related disciplines (meteorology, physics, geography, plant ecology, forestry, etc.)
  • Research experience in eddy covariance flux measurements or other micrometeorological methods and/or experience with drone-based ecosystem analysis (required)
  • Experience with data analysis in R, python, matlab, or other relevant programming languages (preferred)
  • Skills and interest in working scientifically and quantitatively (required)
  • Ability and willingness to perform fieldwork in Indonesia (required)
  • Driving license (preferred)
  • Proficiency in English (required)
