Offer Description

The UNIVERSITY OF BREMEN, Faculty 05 / Geosciences is offering the position of a

Research Assistant (PhD student) (f/m/d)

Salary level 13 TV-L with 75% of the full working time per week, in the

Crystallography & Geomaterials group (research group “Crystalline Microporous Materials”),

limited for the duration of 3 years (according to § 2 WissZeitVG), starting as soon as possible.

Open to unconventional approaches in research and teaching, the University of Bremen has preserved its character as a place of short distances for people and ideas since its founding 50 years ago. With a wide range of subjects, it combines exceptional performance and great potential for innovation with a strong orientation towards interdisciplinarity. We firmly stand for the approach of research-based learning and studying. Our 'Bremen Spirit' is expressed in the courage to venture into the new, in a supportive togetherness, in respect and appreciation for each other on an equal footing, as well as in flat hierarchies.
With our academic and research profile, we take on societal responsibility in the region, in Europe, and worldwide. Across all subjects, the UN Sustainable Development Goals and climate justice are particularly important to us in both research and teaching. Around 23,000 individuals learn, teach, research, and work on our international campus. As one of the leading European research universities and part of the YUFE network, we contribute to the advancement of society. We actively foster and shape scientific collaborations globally.

Job description

We are looking for a motivated PhD student with prior experience in the fields of atomistic materials modelling and/or theoretical crystallography to work on the project “Adsorption of pharmaceuticals and related compounds in cation-exchanged zeolites – A computational perspective”, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). In the project, computational chemistry methods, especially density functional theory calculations, will be employed to investigate the interaction of pharmaceutically active compounds and other organic molecules with cation-exchanged zeolites. These materials could find future uses in drug delivery and wastewater treatment applications. In addition to conducting and analysing simulations, there will be opportunities to collaborate with experimental partners. Contributions to the research field are expected. The opportunity for a scientific qualification through preparation of a doctoral thesis will be provided and actively supported.

Requirements

  • Academic university degree (master's degree or diploma) in geosciences, materials sciences, chemistry, or a related physical science
  • Knowledge of computational chemistry methods and first experiences in their application
  • Basic understanding of crystalline materials and of their interactions with their environment
  • Good oral and written English skills (CEF level B2 or better)

Programming skills and first experiences with the use of high-performance computing facilities would be an asset.
