We are looking for an internationally established scholar with broad teaching and research experience as well as high-quality academic achievements at the domestic and international levels. The professorship represents the field of Public Anthropology in research and teaching in its entirety and it expected to develop it further and to contribute to the faculty’s international profile.

 

The professorship in the area of Cultural Research with a special emphasis on culture in practice and transfer – Public Anthropology - will focus on the practice and reflection of anthropological/cultural studies knowledge in and with diverse publics, as well as on the generation of new publics via methods of collaborative ethnographic knowledge production. As a publicly active form of anthropology and cultural research, the professorship is expected to build up a working focus in the fields of media anthropology and digital cultures and will address at least one of the following research areas: work cultures, cultural politics, STS (Social Studies of Sciences and Technologies), methodological innovation or Environmental Humanities. The professorship will also be expected to work at the interface of academic practice, society and culture via transfer and collaboration. The position is also expected to encourage students to explore a variety of cultural fields and institutions independently while also becoming active in these fields and institutions themselves.

 

The Department of Anthropology and Cultural Research is internationally recognized in research and teaching. The University of Bremen provides an ideal environment for interdisciplinary research and places great value on internal and external cooperation. The appointed person is expected to participate in interdisciplinary research networks, especially in the research platform Worlds of Contradiction (WoC). The candidate will also be expected to participate in or co-lead the newly established interdisciplinary English-language BA program in Environmental Humanities in the Department of Anthropology and Cultural Research.

 

The professorship will teach in the BA-program Cultural Studies and the MA-program Transcultural Studies, and is expected to teach in the interdisciplinary, English-language BA Environmental Humanities program beginning in the winter-term 2025-26.

 

The successful candidate is expected to have the ability to deliver courses both in the German (C1) and English language and display the willingness to participate in the faculty’s self-governing bodies. Mid-level language skills in one of the two teaching languages can be deepened during the first four years. The teaching load is based on the regulations of the state of Bremen and currently amounts to 9 hours weekly.

 

The position holder should have a national and international track record in research in the above-mentioned areas. Competencies with regard to the consideration of gender and diversity dimensions in research and teaching are desirable.

 

In addition to fulfilling the general civil service law requirements for employment, a completed relevant academic university degree in the field of social and cultural anthropology, empirical cultural studies or related subjects is mandatory. A special aptitude for scientific work, proven by a relevant high-ranking doctorate and the habilitation or other outstanding habilitation-equivalent achievements, such as those achieved in the context of a junior professorship, junior research group leadership or other professorships, are required. Pedagogical aptitude and readiness for further training in higher education didactics are expected. The appointment is based on § 18 BremHG and § 116 BremBG. If the general civil service requirements are met, the position will be tenured.
