Offer Description

The Kiel Institute for the World Economy seeks a

Postdoctoral Researcher (part-time) in Economics and Global Health.

This vacant position will be integrated in the global health research group led by Dr. Michael Stolpe. The group cooperates closely with leading medical researchers and evolutionary biologists in a new research project on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), including the economic evaluation of novel interventions designed to combat AMR worldwide.

The global health research group is currently expanding its scope with a particular focus on infectious diseases, health inequalities and digital health services and develops novel methods for economic evaluations of health technologies and services. The research will make use of large datasets to test and calibrate empirical models with the aim to generate evidence-based policy advice for national and international decision makers in health policy and healthcare management. Thus, excellent quantitative analytical and statistical as well as communication skills are required.

Working environment

Apart from working closely with group members at the Kiel Institute, the successful candidate will liaise with external partners and help shape the further development of the group, mainly by contributing excellent peer-reviewed journal publications.

Requirements

We are looking for a candidate who meets the following conditions:

  • She/he holds a doctorate degree in economics, health economics, health science, biostatistics, bioinformatics, epidemiology or public health (or is close to completing it), ideally with a focus on health economics, economic evaluations and/or decision theory and has an excellent academic record as well as the ambition to publish in high-impact peer-reviewed research journals in economics and global health.
  • The position’s primary focus will be on empirical research, with a thematic focus on infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance and medical decision making. Thus, interest and experience in empirical applications of economic theory, the analysis of large health data sets and health economic modelling are desirable.
  • The candidate should have experience and/or familiarity with quantitative methods used in micro-econometrics and/or biostatistics. In addition, the candidate should be interested in developing proposals for health policy reform.
  • The working language is English; excellent English skills are therefore required. Some knowledge of German would be useful, but is not essential.
  • The successful candidate should be acquainted with relevant software, such as STATA, R, TreeAge and Matlab.

The position will be based in Kiel, but remote work is negotiable, and is initially funded for one year, starting on June 1st , 2024. The salary will be based on the German public sector pay scale at grade EG 13 TV-L. The position is half-time, and a further reduction of working time can in principle be negotiated. Depending on additional third-party funding becoming available and after successful internal evaluation, contract extensions and increases in working time may be feasible.

The Kiel Institute for the World Economy values diversity. We welcome applications regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion/belief, disability, age or sexual orientation. We strive for equal participation of women in all employee groups. Professional gender equality is guaranteed. We are committed to employing persons with recognized disabilities and will therefore give them preference over persons without disabilities if they are equally qualified. Please submit your application online by April 25, 2024 (ID-No. “03_24_PostDoc_Health_01”) including a letter of interest, CV, an academic writing sample, transcripts of academic records and two letters of recommendation, using your family name as the file name. Application photos should not be included.
