The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (registered association) is one of the leading centers for fusion research and is engaged in developing the physical foundations for a future fusion power plant. The institute is affiliated to the European Fusion Programme.

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers an opportunity to participate in a post doctorate program to perform research activities in the division Tokamak Scenario Development (E1) which operates the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) tokamak. Boronization, i.e. the coating of surfaces with boron-hydride layers, is a key technique to provide stable plasma start-up and high perfor­mance operation conditions. With this technique comprehensive experience exists for AUG's operation domain, however, an evaluation in view of the specific ITER fusion reactor requirements is still missing.

We look for a

Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/div) 
to Further Advance the Understanding of Boronization Aspects for Fusion Reactor Conditions


Your tasks
  • To optimize the glow discharge conditions, which are used for boronization
  • To perform residual gas analysis using quadruple instruments, including modeling of the results
  • To analyze samples using scanning electron microscopy and ion beam techniques 

Your profile / Our requirements
  • PhD in experimental physics, chemistry, or material science with strong focus on surface science
  • Profound knowledge of plasma wall interaction and diagnostics 
  • Experience in the analysis of physics data 

Your abilities 
  • Experience with Python, residual gas, and surface analysis 
  • Ability to fluently present complex scientific and technical matters in English 
  • Enthusiasm to work in science and willingness to join an international team

The position is limited to a duration of three years. The salary is based on the assignment of tasks and quali­fications and goes up to pay group 13 according to the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD Bund).
