Location: Dortmund, NORDRHEIN WESTFALEN

Job Code: 1/2024

Job Offer from January 23, 2024

The Department of Systemic Cell Biology (Prof. Dr. Bastiaens) at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology in Dortmund is offering a postdoctoral position (m/f/d) in Chemical Biology to work in an interdisciplinary team of biochemists and physicists towards reconstituting out-of-equilibrium life-like biohybrid systems from self-organizing (bio)chemical (auto)catalysts and dynamic polymers.

In the context of studying cellular information processing by the bottom up reconstitution of out-of-equilibrium encapsulated systems from (bio)chemical polymer elements and enzymatic activities, the Department of Systemic Cell Biology designs and builds morphogenic and autopoietic ‘life-like’ systems that exhibit natural computation (see Nature article ).

We are looking for an enthusiastic, inquisitive and creative team player with a PhD in chemical biology, biophysics, physical chemistry or physics to join our team. The candidate should preferentially have additional experience with any of the following disciplines: protein (bio)chemistry, enzymology, physical chemistry of lipid assemblies, reconstitution of out-of-equilibrium complex (bio)chemical systems. She/he should have a keen interest in understanding how complex (bio)chemical reaction dynamics at a deformable boundary to the environment generate morphodynamic patterns that contain information on the environment. Ideally, the candidate has also knowledge about photonics,  advanced image processing, statistical physics and non-linear dynamics.

The position is available immediately and is limited to 2 years with the possibility of prolongation. Financial compensation will be carried out according to the public service remuneration scheme TVöD.
