Work group:
IEK-9 - Grundlagen der Elektrochemie
Area of research:
Scientific / postdoctoral posts
Job description:
At the Institute for Energy and Climate Research - Fundamentals of Electrochemistry (IEK-9), we perform research on highly relevant topics related to the energy transition. For example, we investigate new battery concepts and how we can turn the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) to the fuel of the future. The aim is to develop sustainable and cost-effective electrochemical systems with improved energy and power density, longer life time, and maximal safety. Find out more about our mission and future-oriented projects here: go.fzj.de/IEK-9
Your Job:
We are searching for people, who would like to change the future with us. As a Postdoc, you will be working on a project in the field of energy research that is devoted to the electrochemical conversion of CO2 into base chemicals. The conversion of CO2 into base chemicals by CO2-electrolysis is a most-promising approach for the sustainable creation of value and the reliable provision of energy and resources in the fading lignite mining area in the Rhineland (Rheinisches Revier). However, research on CO2-electrolysis needs more than the singular consideration of technology itself, and depends on the identification of links to the future energy system and the implementation of novel technology therein as well. By your contribution you will be able to shape the entanglement of technology and system requirements. Most specifically you will be engaged with the following tasks:
- Independent development of methods and models for the analysis of renewable energy systems with respect to the application of CO2 as a carbon source
- Technology assessment regarding CO2-electrolysis towards base chemicals such as CO, C2H4, HCOOH etc.
- Techno-economic evaluation of use case scenarios for selected CO2-electrolysis methods
- Exciting collaboration with internal as well as external partners
- Scientific dissemination and presentation of the acquired insights
Your Profile:
- University degree and Ph.D. in physics, mathematics, computer science, chemistry or similar
- In-depth experience in analysis and modelling of energy systems as well as technology assessment
- Experience regarding the electrochemical conversion of CO2 is advantageous
- Capacity and pleasure of collaborative working
- Motivated and self-reliant work attitude
- Good spoken and written English language skills are the basis for successful working in our international team, good German language skills are advantageous
Our Offer:
We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We support you in your work with:
- A large research campus with green spaces, offering the best possible means for networking with colleagues and pursuing sports alongside work
- Comprehensive training courses and individual opportunities for personal and professional further development
- Extensive company health management
- Ideal conditions for balancing work and private life, as well as a family-friendly corporate policy
- Full-time position with the option of slightly reduced working hours and 30 days of annual leave
- Exploration and preparation of next career opportunities supported by our Career Center & Postdoc Office (https://www.fz-juelich.de/careercenter )
- Targeted services for international employees, e.g. through our International Advisory Service
We offer you an exciting and varied role in an international and interdisciplinary working environment. The position is initially for a fixed term of 2 years, with possible long-term prospects. Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD).Forschungszentrum Jülich promotes equal opportunities and diversity in its employment relations. We also welcome applications from disabled persons.
This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany's largest scientific organisation.
