The Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI) of the Technical University of Munich is seeking a PhD/Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) Teaming up Aquatic, Ground, and Aerial Robotic Systems for Data-Driven Environmental Surveying

You want to develop robotic systems that not just work in the lab but are also released to the wild? You are excited to explore new fields and work in a stimulating research environment?

We are looking for an outstanding and highly motivated postdoctoral (i.e., recently or soon-to-be PhD graduate) researcher to join our Environmental Robotics team at MIRMI under the supervision of Prof. Sami Haddadin. Your work will extend our existing work on mobile robotic systems for environmental monitoring and protection.

You are expected to develop your own scientific ideas/concepts within the framework of the research group objectives. We will provide all guidance and support for writing papers and will submit to our focus conferences IEEE ICRA & IROS, and corresponding journals.

Key Responsibilities

  •  Design of algorithms that connect aerial, ground, aquatic robots such that each domain can effectively contribute its strengths to the team to enable efficient monitoring missions.
  • Development of a multi-domain framework for autonomous and semi-autonomous navigation.
  • Development of a Remote Satellite Lab and its digital twin simulation.
  • Conceiving experimental setups for real-time field tests of autonomous robots.
  • Outdoor missions at Bavarian lakes and international offshore locations.
  • Active support in teaching activities at the Master's and/or Bachelor’s level courses.
  • Supervision of Master and Bachelor students.

Your Skills:


  • M.Sc. or PhD. with background in robotics, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering or a related field.
  • Knowledge in the area of mobile manipulation and control of autonomous vehicles.
  • Hands-on experience with developing autonomous and mobile robotic systems, working with both their hardware and software.
  • Strong programming skills in C++ or python, and proficiency in ROS.
  • Very good command of the English language & good command in German.
  • Strong analytical skill, pro-active interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • High motivation and willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary team.
