Your Job:
Intending to characterize neuronal networks, diagnose, and treat medical diseases, one of the research fields in our institute is the development of penetrating neural implants for reading and modulating the neural activity of the brain and other nervous tissues in in vivo applications. However, different physical and biological challenges must be addressed before the intended application becomes available to society. These neural implants are needed to harmonize with the mechanical properties of the target tissue, thereby reducing foreign body reactions that can lead to scar tissue and further implant rejection. To this end, this project aims to develop a ultra-conformal intracortical implant based on polymeric thin film composites, such as polyimide, parylene-C, and polydimethylsiloxane.
Your tasks will include:
- The simulation of the mechanical behavior of thin film composites using different polymer materials
- The fabrication and implementation of polymeric thin film composites for neural implants
- The electrochemical (impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry) and mechanical (tensile testing) characterization of the ultra-conformal implant
Your Profile:
- Bachelor’s degree in materials science, physics, biomedical engineering, microsystems technologies, or a related field
- Ability to communicate with scientists and technicians from various disciplines
- Well-structured and systematic research approach
- Passion for science
- Advantageous, yet not mandatory, is knowledge in microfabrication technology
- Interest in the field of Bioelectronics and Neuroscience
