Master Thesis: Design of an integrated Micro-Oven on FD-SOI Silicon

Updated: 7 days ago

The Fraunhofer Research Institution for Microsystems and Solid State Technologies EMFT, with currently almost 155 employees at its sites in Munich (headquarters), Oberpfaffenhofen and Regensburg, conducts cutting-edge applied research on sensors and actuators for people and the environment. The competences are based on impressive long-term experience and extensive know-how in the fields of microelectronics and microsystem technology. These nano- and microtechnologies are the basis for the other competence areas at Fraunhofer EMFT: sensor solutions, safe and secure electronics, and micropumps. The interdisciplinary interaction of these competencies enables the development of truly novel solutions, putting Fraunhofer EMFT in an ideal position for tackling the current challenges of our society.

In our IC design group, we aim for precise performance of electronic circuits under various temperature conditions. To stabilize the temperature locally (within ~ 250 x 250 μm2), we pursue the integration of a Micro-Oven on silicon. Such innovative solution requires not only a heater and temperature sensor, but particularly a realistic thermal model of the system. For this modelling part we seek your support and offer a challenging task for your Master's Thesis: As a member of our design team, you will compose thermal models from the material properties of a 22nm SOI waver process. While you run circuit & thermal simulations, you will eventually develop your optimized oven structure. This should allow an effective temperature regulation at ~100°C with respect to material/layer placement and electro-thermal coupling.

Become part of our team and write your Master Thesis with us!

What you will do

  • Study existing realizations (publications) of micro-ovens and related challenges
  • Extract a realistic thermal model based on a sample IC layout
  • Perform thermal simulations for different versions of an oven structure
  • Investigate and utilize the support of “Cadence Celsius Thermal Solver” software
  • Eventually develop a sensor/actor arrangement for maximum temperature stability

What you bring to the table

  • Enrollment in a master's degree program
  • Solid know-how in thermal modelling
  • Experience with relevant tools (e.g. COMSOL) for thermal simulations
  • Basic understanding of semiconductor technology (from graduate level courses)
  • Preferably some initial knowledge of integrated circuits and design tools (Cadence)
  • Good analytical capabilities, with a pro-active and structured working style
  • Good German or English language skills

What you can expect

  • A challenging and demanding thesis with responsibility, practical relevance and creative freedom
  • Insights into applied research between science and industry
  • Professional and personal development through state-of-the-art research and development work
  • Integration into the research community through scientific and administrative support
  • Flexible working hours to suit your studies
  • Good transport connections and a central location in the heart of Munich

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
