Internship: Design of a PID control for temperature regulation application

Updated: 29 days ago
Location: Dresden, SACHSEN
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Developing innovative technology solutions and bringing them to application - that is our goal at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS .  With our expertise in the development of photonic microsystems, related technologies including nanoelectronics and wireless communication solutions, we create - in flexible and interdisciplinary teams - technologies for innovative products in a wide range of markets such as automotive, industrial and aerospace.

As a part of ongoing ASIC development a temperature control concept for a micro-heater based target is expected. The temperature will be sensed using a thermistor and based on the sensed value a PWM signal is applied to the micro heater to regulate the temperature of the system. The goal of the internship is to demonstrate the temperature control concept using a microcontroller such that inherent challenges in the sensing and heating elements are identified.
Fraunhofer IPMS has been developing IP cores as well as complete digital and analog ASICs for many years. The work is done in a professional laboratory environment with state-of-the-art measurement equipment and individual supervision.

What you will do

  • Developing a demonstrator concept
  • Defining a test environment
  • Implementing the concept for the microcontroller on the hardware platform
  • Data acquisition and control using microcontroller

These tasks can be worked on as part of a bachelor´s thesis or as a student assistant.

What you bring to the table

  • Studies in electrical engineering, computer science or a related field
  • Basics of electronics and circuit theory
  • Basic knowledge in embedded system interfaces and communication protocols
  • Know-how in C programming
  • You can score with a lot of commitment, organizational and communicational skills and team spirit
  • Good English and basis German skills

What you can expect

We offer you an exciting task and valuable insights into the methods and procedures of a modern high-tech research institute. A motivated and dynamic team awaits you in a very well-equipped research and development environment. In addition, we offer you connecting points in the context of your studies or your career entry, e.g. a topic for your thesis or the beginning of your career at Fraunhofer IPMS. We will support you!

The weekly working time is 39 hours. The position is temporary for the duration of the internship. The duration is flexible according to agreement and possible study guidelines. . We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Remuneration according to the federal government guidelines for intern salaries.
