The Institute of Helicopter Technology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has several openings for Doctoral Researchers with the earliest possible start date of 1 June, 2017.
The Institute of Helicopter Technology focuses on all aspects of rotorcraft, namely aerodynamics, rotor dynamics and structural dynamics, flight dynamics and controls, performance, human-machine interaction, and rotorcraft design including all subsystems (e.g., electric propulsion, hydraulics, avionics, HUMS, etc.).
In this project funded by the European Commission, together with five European partner universities and research agencies, TUM will develop new helicopter rotor blade morphing technologies which will reduce fuel burn, CO2 and NOx emissions by 5-10%, while also reducing noise emissions to lower the environmental footprint of aviation. We envision shape-adaptive blades that can continuously change their shape to optimize performance in all operating conditions. Comprehensive rotor analysis, high-fidelity coupled aerodynamic/structural solvers, detailed morphing mechanism models, and emissions models will be combined, creating the most detailed, transdisciplinary, and comprehensive modeling approach for active morphing rotors so far. Concurrently, the partner institutions will develop, mature, and test new morphing rotor technologies through bench-top, whirl-tower, and wind-tunnel testing. Results will be constantly fed back to the computational/analytical models and vice versa, for model validation, optimization of the technologies, to specify test requirements, and to guide the technology development towards configurations that maximize performance and minimize emissions.
Applicants are expected to have a degree with excellent grades in aerospace, mechanical engineering, or in a closely related field. Expertise in aerodynamics, dynamics, aeroelasticity and computational fluid dynamics for fixed-wing and rotary-wing applications is a plus.
Professional English levels are necessary, and German language skills are expected. You enjoy teamwork but can also work independently, and you are curious about learning new skills and interdisciplinary approaches that the exciting field of rotorcraft engineering, science and technology offers. This position is offered for three years with compensation and benefits according to the public service TV-L conditions. Handicapped applicants with essentially the same qualifications will be preferred. TUM thrives to increase the percentage of women in its workforce. Applications from women are therefore strongly encouraged.
For further information on this position or the associated research, and to submit your complete application package containing all necessary documents, please contact Dr. Juergen Rauleder (firstname.lastname@example.org; +49 89 289 16303). Please include (in English or German): a cover letter, CV/resume including research projects (and description), transcripts (B.Sc., M.Sc or equivalent) with conversion table to German or US grading system if from other country, published papers (if any), B.Sc. and M.Sc. theses and research reports.
