BA/MA Modeling and ecological balancing of the LPBF process chain

Updated: about 1 hour ago
Location: Aachen, NORDRHEIN WESTFALEN

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT offers the opportunity to write a thesis.

Additive manufacturing processes such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) allow near-net-shape production of components with increased functional integration and reduced material usage. Additive manufacturing is therefore considered to be of central importance in terms of increasing the sustainability of future product developments and production chains. In contrast to conventional manufacturing processes, the tool-free production of components promises advantages not only in terms of the resulting economy, but also ecology.

As part of the thesis, a life cycle model for additively manufactured components is to be developed and implemented in a commercial software solution. Knowledge of additive manufacturing and sustainability management is an advantage, but not essential.

What you will do

  • Research on the state of the art for the implementation of life cycle models in additive manufacturing
  • Decomposition of the process chain and development of a new life cycle model for additively manufactured components
  • Ecological balancing and identification of key emission drivers and reduction measures
  • Evaluation and documentation of the results

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying a technical or scientific degree program (e.g. mechanical engineering, materials science, physics)
  • Interest in application-oriented research and development
  • Great commitment, creativity and an independent and reliable way of working
  • Good knowledge of German

What you can expect

  • Practice-oriented thesis in an innovative working environment
  • Excellent equipment in the laboratories and first-class machines and devices
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Flexible working hours for a better work-study balance
  • Very good transportation options (bus; car)

The position is temporary until completion of the thesis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
