Job description:

The Institute for AI Safety and Security provides research and development services in the field of AI-related methods, processes, algorithms and execution environments. The focus is on ensuring safety and security for AI-based solutions in ambitious application classes. “Safety and security by design” is a central aspect in this context, since it directly supports future requirements of safety-critical applications that are based on AI or integrate AI-based components.

In the Execution Environments and Innovative Methods department, we look at AI from the perspective of challenging platforms on which AI is trained and used, such as embedded solutions or quantum computers. We also conduct research into novel approaches for AI architectures.

As part of research on AI execution environments, you will evaluate AI approaches from a future application perspective and embed them in established AI pipelines and processes. You will optimise the fundamental prototypes from our department in terms of their applicability and efficiency.

You will work on the implementation of software from a variety of cross-sectional applications in all of DLR's focal areas - in aeronautics, space, energy and transport. Your research questions deal with all topics of our department such as the parallelisation of quantum AI methods and innovative AI systems on powerful simulators. You will also support the development of AI on challenging execution environments with your HPC skills. For this purpose, we have access to powerful HPC systems, a selection of different mobile platforms and DLR's own quantum computers during the course of the project.

An important part of your work will be to support our interdisciplinary and international team in their software development projects and to collaborate with our external partners from academia and industry.

With your work, you will make an indispensable contribution to increasing the performance of novel AI methods and preparing them for their potential applications. This enables the responsible introduction of these AI-based solutions into ambitious application classes.

The opportunity to work on a PhD thesis can be offered, when the suitable qualification is given. Prerequisite for employment at DLR is security clearance in accordance with the German Security Clearance Act (SÜG) and the willingness to undergo a security clearance in accordance with §8 ff SÜG.

This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany's largest scientific organisation.
