Job description:

On the site of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in Cologne, DLR is building a facility called LUNA for the development and simulation of future Earth's moon space missions in a joint project with ESA. In addition to basic astronautical and robotic missions, the objective is to prepare united and autonomous lunar operations. The outfitting elements of LUNA are provided by various DLR institutes and ESA departments, but only their joint utilization enables the realization of planned mission scenarios and test campaigns. For this purpose, all components and units are connected to an IT ground segment based on space mission standards that is operated by mission teams in Cologne and Oberpfaffenhofen. At Cologne-Porz, an operator team of the Microgravity User Support Center (MUSC) manages and runs the LUNA control center.

The focus of the work is on the implementation, verification and long-term operation of the MUSC IT ground infrastructure of LUNA, which is planned, realized and deployed together with the LUNA IT team at Oberpfaffenhofen. In addition, an internal MUSC ground segment is to be planned and implemented and finally put into operation: it is used for simulation and operations preparation and is the MUSC contribution to the LUNA project.

Hybrid working is possible after consultation and depending on project requirements.

Your job includes the following tasks:

  • Planning, integration and verification of IT systems such as network components, firewalls, virtual systems, servers, and clients
  • Ensuring the availability of IT systems by regularly verifying and monitoring IT systems, troubleshooting and carrying out resolution of issues on your own
  • Monitoring data streams for the purpose of error detection and error correction
  • Configuration and verification of mission control systems (telemetry/telecommanding)
  • Participation in coordination and mission meetings with international partners
  • Ongoing adaptation and improvement of IT security measures and systems
  • Supporting the operations engineers at the consoles during operational mission phases and validation tests, and diagnosing/resolving issues
  • Continuous renewal of hardware and software as part of obsolescence management
  • Support the development process of our Mission Control System SpaceMaster®, which includes development planning together with medium-sized industrial partners
  • Maintenance and further development of an issue tracking system
  • Documentation of IT systems and processes

This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany's largest scientific organisation.
