Job description:Would you like to work in tandem to further develop Germany's leading team in the field of concentrating solar technology and provide your own impetus for the energy supply of the future? With 120 employees, the Institute of Solar Research is one of the world's leading research organisations in the field of concentrating solar technology for the provision of high-temperature heat for power plants and industrial processes. Our work ranges from fundamental investigations to the realisation of technologies in close cooperation with industry.  Once the relevant activities have been merged into a joint "Concentrating Solar Technologies (CST)" department, it will be managed in the form of a tandem. The sought-after co-department head will be based in Stuttgart and work together with the co-department head Dr Kai Wieghardt in Jülich. The department focusses on the development, evaluation and experimental validation of components and subsystems in the field of concentrating solar technology up to the megawatt scale. The department currently has around 50 employees and numerous laboratories and large-scale facilities are assigned to it, including the Jülich solar tower and a molten salt test platform in Portugal operated in cooperation with the University of Évora. As Head of Department, you will be responsible for the technical and disciplinary management of the department together with your colleague in Jülich. The "Fluid Systems" and "Particle Systems" working groups, whose group leaders are based at the Stuttgart site, are directly assigned to you. Your area of responsibility includes

  • strategic development and representation of the research field internally and externally
  • definition, implementation and guidance of scientific research in this field
  • building strategic partnerships with the industry
  • recruitment and management of employees
  • acquisition of research funds
  • definition and structure of large systems
  • management of personnel, infrastructure and resources

This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany's largest scientific organisation.
