Offer Description
INRAE presentation

The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment (INRAE) is a public research establishment under the dual authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Research. It is a community of 12,000 people with more than 200 research units and 42 experimental units located throughout France.

The institute is among the world leaders in agricultural and food sciences, in plant and animal sciences, and is 11th in the world in ecology and environment. INRAE’s main goal is to be a key player in the transitions necessary to address major global challenges. In the face of the increase in population, climate change, scarcity of resources and decline in biodiversity, the institute develops solutions for multiperformance agriculture, high quality food and sustainable management of resources and ecosystems.

Work environment, missions and activities

Nature and purpose of the research project to be developed and related activities :
Profound epigenetic changes are at work during the critical periods of gestational development, including the periconceptional, embryonic, and foetal-placental phases. Any disruption of these mechanisms by environmental factors (heat stress, modification of food inputs, exposure to deteriorated environments…) can affect the lineage with potential transmission over several generations through epigenetic marks in the gametes induced by these disruptions. The person recruited will study the interactions between one or several environments linked to climate change (dietary changes, maternal metabolism, heat stress…), the physiological adaptations established and the epigenetic changes at one or several critical stages, and the post-natal phenotype in mammals of agricultural interest (ruminant model should be favoured). Comparative approaches between different species will be possible. The junior professor will work closely with the scientists within the unit specialised in epigenetics and physiology for the mechanistic studies. To start their studies, they will also be able to use the disruption models (nutrition, heat stress, suburban environment…) already used. They will work in collaboration with the whole unit to study late phenotypes. Their research will help determine positive levers to reduce the harmful effects of the environment and enable livestock farming better adapted to climate disruption and new farming conditions.

Nature and purpose of the teaching project :
The person recruited will invest in teaching at several levels at Paris-Saclay University. Their lessons will cover cell metabolism. Within the courses addressing the concept of DOHaD, their expertise will supplement the lessons currently proposed dealing with epigenetic mechanisms, gametogenesis, and the embryo. Within the Faculty of Medicine, the junior professor will contribute to lessons on cell physiology and biology at Versailles Saint-Quentin University, and may be involved in teaching their speciality in the Life Sciences and Health department at AgroParistech. They will contribute to the Master's specialising in integrative biology and physiology in the M1 in Animal Integrative Biology and Physiology (BIP) and the M2 in Predictive & Integrative Animal Biology (PRIAM), as well as the M2: Reproduction and Development (ReproDev) of the Biology Health option. They will be attached to the Biosphera Graduate School (https://www.universite-paris-saclay.fr/graduate-schools/graduate-school… ) and within this framework may also propose other transversal or international courses within EUGLOH (European University Alliance for Global Health).

Funding and related resources :
Package ANR : 200 000€
Package INRAE : 210 000€
Total : 410 000€

The lessons are in various locations at Paris-Saclay University and some in Paris. You will have to travel to the lessons. There will be occasional trips to the INRAE experimental units or other laboratories to collect samples and use specific equipment not available at the centre.

Training and skills
PhD or equivalent

PhD or equivalent

The person recruited must have a PhD in science and sound post-doctoral experience in the field of physiology of development and/or reproduction in farm animals. They must also have experience in teaching and supervising students. Good command of English is necessary. Experience in nutrition and/or epigenetics would be an additional asset.

Team spirit, strong scientific curiosity, and good interpersonal skills are important.

Type of contract

Tenure-Track Junior Professor Chair enables recruitment of scientists based on a research and teaching project that lasts three years. At the end of this period, and following an assessment of your scientific achievements and professional capabilities, you may obtain a full-tenure position as Research Director (DR2).

A research and teaching agreement will specify the path you will follow towards full-tenure and enable you to acquire the qualifications necessary to become a full-tenure Research Director in your field.

You have until April 12, 2024to submit your application. Only candidates previously selected on file by the selection committee will be invited to the hearing.
