Offer Description
The MHD@Exascale collaboration, funded by the PEPR Origins, aims to establish a new generation of magnetohydrodynamic codes ready for the Exascale computing era. This work is positioned within the global context of studying astrophysical conditions for planet formation: including the formation of proto-planetary disks, properties of the interstellar medium, and galaxies.
The selected person's mission for this postdoc will be to develop the modeling of a cosmic ray fluid within the adaptive mesh refinement code Dyablo. This involves modeling the advection-diffusion transport of cosmic rays in magnetized plasma. Ultimately, this modeling will enable the study of the impact of cosmic ray feedback on the dynamics and thermochemistry of the gas. Dyablo is an adaptive mesh refinement code written in C++ and relies on the Kokkos ecosystem, facilitating performance portability across different computing architectures.
- Developing a cosmic ray transport model in fluid form within the Dyablo code.
- Numerical simulations of the feedback of cosmic rays on the interstellar medium.
- Scientific analysis and interpretation of results.
- Producing scientific publications and presenting at conferences.
The selected person will be based at the IAP (Paris, France). The IAP is one of the largest French centers for extragalactic astrophysics, composed of interconnected, dynamic research groups visible internationally, exploring various themes including galaxy evolution, large-scale structures of the Universe, high-energy astrophysics, and advanced numerical methods. Funding is allocated for missions abroad and computing equipment. Access to computing clusters is planned.
The MHD@Exascale collaboration comprises a national team of about ten permanent researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and doctoral students. The selected person will be in contact with this team primarily through regular video conferences and in-person meetings.
This position is funded by the targeted project MHD@Exascale, within the PEPR Origins framework that began in May 2023. This project involves researchers from the Institut d'astrophysique de Paris (IAP), Centre de recherche astrophysique de Lyon (CRAL), Department of Astrophysics of the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA DAp), and the Institut de planétologie et d'astrophysique de Grenoble (IPAG). The successful candidate will work closely with the members of MHD@Exascale, especially with Y. Dubois (IAP), B. Commerçon, G. Laibe (CRAL), P. Hennebelle, D. Chapon (CEA DAp), G. Lesur (IPAG), and several researchers specialized in numerical modeling.
