Offer Description
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means joining the public reference establishment in Earth sciences bringing together 1,000 expert and passionate people, spread across 29 entities located in mainland France and overseas.
BRGM's activity aims at geological knowledge and understanding of phenomena linked to the ground and subsoil, with one challenge: responding to the challenges of environmental change through innovative projects with societal issues.
In France, urban areas are home to 77% of the French population and occupy 22% of the territory with an increase of 19% since 2000 (INSEE).
Urban expansion generates major problems in more than one way. From an ecological point of view, the large covered areas and soil degradation, the fragmentation of habitats and management practices have important consequences on the structure and diversity of species and ecosystem functioning. Indeed, the soil is the most diverse habitat on Earth and it is home to prokaryotic and eukaryotic fauna and microorganisms, which play an important role in the functioning of ecosystems. In particular, bacteria are involved in numerous biogeochemical processes. Acquiring knowledge on the soils of urban areas is particularly important in the current context of urban densification.
Job description
During the BIENSUR (APR IR 2019-2023) and FORME (INSU EC2CO 2020-2021) research projects, the total edaphic microbial communities in urban green spaces which are little-known, complex and highly anthropized ecosystems were characterized.
Then, a long-term soil transplantation experiment (10 years) was set up in May 2022 in a land reserve and a public green space in the city of Blois in order to simulate a change in management (mowing, fertilization, irrigation).
The objective was to determine the resilience of the activities, abundances and diversity of soil microbial communities as well as the services associated with them in the event of a change in management or an attempt to restore urban green spaces.
The post-doctoral student will deepen the analyses of these projects, and will be engaged in determining the functions provided by the soil microbiome and analysing their capacity for resilience in the face of a change in management.
This postdoctoral offer is co-funded by the Centre Val de Loire Region.
Within the Geomicrobiology and environmental monitoring team (BRGM, Orléans) and in collaboration with the UMR CITERES (INSA-CVL, Blois), the work of the post doctoral researcher will mainly consist of analysing the data acquired in the framework of the BienSur and Forme projects on the microbiological (activity, diversity) and physico-chemical characterization of 135 soils and experiments implemented over the long term.
Strong ability to manipulate databases (including sequencing data) is expected coupled with an understanding of the microbiological functioning of soils (biogeochemical cycles).
The post-doctoral student will also be expected to participate in ongoing experiments and in the supervision of trainees as well as in the communication and valorisation of results (writing of project deliverables and scientific publications).
