Offer Description
One of the aims of the ANR Flores project (Gene flow to the rescue: Assessing the need, effectiveness, risks and ethical implications of manipulating gene flow to improve adaptation to climate change for long-lived plants), to which the post-doctorate will belong, is to examine the practice of assisted gene flow from the point of view of the values and representations it implies for the various players involved in the management of natural areas and forests and nature conservation, in particular scientists, managers and naturalists. Using an approach combining philosophy and sociology, the aim is to explore the plurality of representations and conservation strategies at work, as well as the values associated with the objects and objectives of protection. This exploration is based on fieldwork with researchers and project partners, as well as with the various managers and naturalists involved in the management of the observation and experimentation sites (Fontainebleau national forest, La Clape massif, Mont Ventoux, forest sites around Verdun).
Several lines of enquiry may be considered, depending on the post-doctoral student's skills and research interests: - Putting into perspective the representations and values associated with the practice within conservation and forestry: how does the practice take on meaning for the various players involved? What logics are at work? - Positioning the practice within a continuum of practices and representations within conservation and forestry: to what extent do assisted gene flows represent a break with, continuity with or renewal of previous conservation strategies and silvicultural practices (population reintroduction or reinforcement programmes, forest enrichment or renewal, etc.)? - To explore the relationship between prediction and the risks and uncertainties associated with the practice.
- Qualitative and quantitative surveys (using interviews, questionnaires and/or observations) will be considered depending on the skills of the person recruited.
- Field surveys (involving mobility) and data reporting
- Analysis of survey data and report writing
- Publication of co-authored articles.
The post-doctoral fellow will be based in the "Nature, science and conservation" team in the "Biodiversity dynamics and conservation" department at the Centre for Functional and Evolutionary Ecology in Montpellier. This post-doctorate is part of the ANR FloRes project, an interdisciplinary project combining natural sciences (ecology, genetics) and social sciences (philosophy, sociology). It involves ISEM (University of Montpellier), CESCO (MNHN), EA (MNHN), URFM (INRAE), BIOFORA (ONF) and CEFE (CNRS). The postdoctoral fellow will be based at the CEFE (UMR5175, Montpellier) and will work in collaboration with the members of the multidisciplinary team. He or she will be provided with a fully equipped workstation. Travel to the field will be paid for by the ANR project.
