Offer Description
About the ReCROP Project (Bioinocula and CROPping systems: an integrated biotechnological approach for improving crop yield, biodiversity, and resilience of Mediterranean agro-ecosystems)
The ReCROP project, funded under the PRIMA framework, is a multidisciplinary European research project in which the Center for Environmental Economics — Montpellier (UMR CEE-M) is participating. The goal is to enhance the resilience and yield of crops, water conservation, and soil health in various agroecosystems of the Mediterranean region in connection with climate change. The idea is to design resilient agroecosystems based on biodiversity for key Mediterranean crops such as vines, corn, and aromatic/medicinal plants. This involves integrating technical and socio-economic aspects related to sustainable farming practices, particularly those associated with bio-inoculants.
The specific objectives of the ReCROP project are as follows: i) improve soil properties (physical/chemical/biological) and carbon sequestration; ii) increase productivity; iii) enhance the provision of ecosystem services; iv) reduce agricultural inputs, prevent runoff, and groundwater contamination; and v) improve water conservation.
The recruited postdoctoral researcher will contribute to Work Package 5 (WP5) of the project, focusing on socio-economic and environmental assessment, involving researchers from UMR CEE-M and CEFE.
WP5 will provide an economic evaluation of the environmental services provided by farmers to assess how farmers might be inclined to accept the implementation of agri-environmental contracts through payments in exchange for adopting innovative agro-ecological practices that promote adaptation to climate change.
To achieve this, the Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) methodology will be employed to assess farmers' preferences for the implementation of these contracts. This exploratory analysis will be conducted in vineyards in France (Occitanie) and Portugal (Douro) to identify key elements for 1) replicating the same approach in other countries and 2) extending it to other crops (e.g., corn).
Contract proposals will vary based on attribute levels selected with the help of Focus Groups (related to WP2 of the project), such as management plans in terms of technical requirements, contract duration, technical assistance, and payments (monetary terms). This will allow for deducing farmers' Willingness To Accept (WTA) for contract adoption, specifically for different contract features, in relation to the opportunity cost of adopting new practices.
Activities:
Design of the Discrete Choice Experiment: exploratory surveys, focus groups, final survey.
Descriptive and econometric statistical analyses.
