Offer Description

As a computational physicist in the NEO team at LAAS, you will set up reactive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to understand the reaction mechanisms at the atomic scale involved in the combustion of Aluminum and Iron nanoparticles. Aluminum burns in the gas phase while iron burns in the liquid phase. Specifically, various ReaxFF potentials will first be evaluated to model the Al-O and Fe-O interactions, and then the oxidation rates of Fe and Al will be characterized based on the surface reaction mechanisms. The rate-limiting mechanisms will be elucidated in detail to support an OpenFOAM CFD model aimed at simulating the steady-state combustion of Fe and Al particles.

Scientific and numerical simulations

Here is the translation of your provided text into English:

Today, microscopic-scale modeling is booming. This is especially due to advances in computational power and numerical methods that have made it possible to perform more complex and longer simulations, allowing for the study of systems at the atomic scale with increased precision. Among the techniques available to us, Molecular Dynamics (MD) provides detailed information on atomic interactions and microscopic mechanisms, essential for predicting the physicochemical properties of new materials. MD offers the ability to model complex phenomena such as diffusion, deformation, chemical reactions, and phase transitions at a scale that is difficult to access through experiments. Therefore, it is a very important tool supporting the development of new materials.
