The archival investigation as well as the interviews will mainly take place in Toulouse, within the LAAS, the laboratory where the archives are stored and where the thesis co-director Aurélie Clodic works. The doctoral student will work within the LAAS for archival research and interviews. They will remain in remote contact with the CESSP, notably for the Social Sciences of Sciences and Techniques seminar (3ST).
The aim of the thesis is to reconstruct, based on archives and interviews, the formation and development of the robotics discipline within the framework of the Laboratory of Analysis and Architecture of Systems (LAAS) located in Toulouse. Robotics is a composite research sector within engineering sciences. Its genesis and its autonomization as a discipline will be considered from the perspective of an interdisciplinary doctoral work supported by methods of historical sociology of sciences and reflective support from robotics. The objective, through an empirical investigation combining historical and sociological practices, is to identify the main lines of research at the intersection of pre-existing knowledge (mechanics, electronics, computer science), to grasp the importance of national and international political programs that have presided over the development of robotics, and to understand the utilitarian logics that drive it.
